About the Role:

The RN Obstetrics plays a critical role in providing comprehensive nursing care to women during pregnancy, labor, delivery, and the postpartum period. This position ensures the health and safety of both mother and newborn by closely monitoring vital signs, fetal heart rates, and labor progress, while responding promptly to any complications. The RN Obstetrics collaborates with physicians, midwives, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement individualized care plans that support positive birth outcomes. Additionally, this role involves educating patients and their families about prenatal care, childbirth, and postpartum recovery to promote informed decision-making and healthy practices. Ultimately, the RN Obstetrics contributes to a supportive and compassionate environment that fosters the well-being of mothers and infants throughout the childbirth experience.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Current and valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the United States.
• Completion of an accredited nursing program (Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Nursing).
• Experience or clinical training in obstetrics, labor and delivery, or maternal-child nursing.
• Strong understanding of maternal and neonatal anatomy, physiology, and common obstetric conditions.
• Proof of AHA BLS training (within past two years)
• Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) (required)
• STABLE program (within one year)

Preferred Qualifications:

• Certification in Inpatient Obstetric Nursing (RNC-OB) or Maternal Newborn Nursing (RNC-MNN).
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
• Experience working in a high-volume labor and delivery unit or maternity ward.
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.
• Familiarity with electronic medical record (EMR) systems specific to obstetric care.

Responsibilities:

• Monitor and assess the physical and emotional condition of pregnant patients throughout labor and delivery.
• Administer medications and treatments as prescribed, including pain management and emergency interventions.
• Collaborate with the healthcare team to develop and adjust care plans based on patient needs and clinical findings.
• Provide education and support to patients and families regarding prenatal care, labor processes, breastfeeding, and postpartum recovery.
• Document patient care activities accurately and maintain detailed medical records in compliance with healthcare regulations.
• Respond promptly to obstetric emergencies, including fetal distress, hemorrhage, and other complications.
• Assist with delivery procedures, including cesarean sections and vaginal births, ensuring sterile technique and patient safety.
• Support newborn care immediately after birth, including initial assessments and facilitating bonding with the mother.

Skills:

The RN Obstetrics utilizes clinical assessment skills daily to monitor maternal and fetal well-being, interpreting vital signs and labor progression to make informed decisions. Effective communication skills are essential for educating patients and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure coordinated care. Critical thinking and quick decision-making are vital when responding to emergencies or unexpected complications during labor and delivery. Technical skills are applied when administering medications, assisting with deliveries, and using medical equipment such as fetal monitors. Additionally, proficiency with documentation and electronic health records ensures accurate and timely recording of patient information, supporting continuity of care and compliance with healthcare standards.
