Full-time

Locations: Windsor, CT, US | Chicago, IL, US | Kansas City, MO, US | Alpharetta, GA, US | New York, NY, US

**Possible locations: New York City, NY | Chicago, IL | Alpharetta, GA | Windsor, CT

**Our company has a hybrid work model where the expectation is that you will be in the office at least three days per week.

Are you a seasoned Construction Professional Liability underwriter who thrives on technical complexity, energizes broker relationships, and takes pride in building a profitable, high-quality portfolio? If you're ready to bring your expertise to a globally respected insurer with the scale and ambition to match your own — this is your opportunity.

Swiss Re Corporate Solutions is looking for a driven and collaborative Professional Liability Underwriter to join our Construction Professional Liability and Miscellaneous Professional Liability team. This role is ideal for someone who understands the nuances of construction-related professional services, enjoys dissecting contract and project exposures, and can translate sophisticated underwriting thinking into clear, commercially practical solutions for brokers and clients.

About the Role

As a Professional Liability Underwriter on our FinPro team, you will take ownership of developing and managing a profitable portfolio of Construction Professional Liability business — spanning both annual practice and project-specific risks. You'll work across a diverse range of construction professionals, evaluate complex exposures, and play a meaningful role in shaping Swiss Re Corporate Solutions' continued growth in the professional liability market.

This role also includes underwriting selected Miscellaneous Professional Liability risks, offering a genuine opportunity to broaden your underwriting capabilities over time.

Key Responsibilities

  • Underwrite and manage a portfolio focused primarily on Construction Professional Liability, including risks for architects, engineers, contractors, design-build firms, construction managers, project owners, and other construction professionals
  • Evaluate both annual practice policies and project-specific professional liability opportunities, including primary and excess placements
  • Analyze insureds' professional services, design responsibilities, project types, delivery methods, contractual obligations, risk management practices, claims history, and financial condition
  • Review construction contracts and professional services agreements to assess indemnification obligations, limitations of liability, warranties, guarantees, contractual assumptions, and the allocation of design responsibility
  • Assess pricing adequacy, attachment points, limits, retentions, policy terms, project duration, post-completion exposure, and extended reporting requirements
  • Identify potential aggregation and capacity exposures across insureds, projects, annual programs, and project-specific placements
  • Develop clear, well-supported underwriting recommendations and document the rationale for risk selection, pricing, terms, and conditions
  • Negotiate coverage, pricing, and policy terms with retail and wholesale brokers while maintaining disciplined risk selection and underwriting standards
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with construction-focused brokers and clients to generate a consistent flow of target business
  • Identify new business and cross-selling opportunities that align with Swiss Re's Construction PI and broader Professional Liability strategy
  • Collaborate with Claims, Actuarial, Risk Engineering, Contracts & Wording, and other underwriting colleagues when evaluating complex risks or exposures requiring additional technical review
  • Monitor portfolio performance, market conditions, claims developments, emerging construction methods, and changes in project delivery and design technology
  • Represent Swiss Re Corporate Solutions through broker meetings, client discussions, marketing visits, and industry events
  • Underwrite selected Miscellaneous Professional Liability opportunities and continue developing expertise across the broader Professional Liability portfolio

About the Team

The Construction Professional Liability and Miscellaneous Professional Liability team is a focused, collaborative, and results-driven group dedicated to underwriting profitable professional liability business across a diverse range of construction and professional service risks. The team provides tailored solutions for architects, engineers, contractors, design-build firms, construction managers, project owners, and a wide spectrum of professional service firms.

We work closely with broker partners to generate quality opportunities, craft commercially practical solutions, and cultivate long-term, trust-based relationships. Inclusive by culture and driven by performance, the team plays a pivotal role in Swiss Re Corporate Solutions' continued growth and leadership in the professional liability market. Here, your ideas are valued, your expertise is recognized, and your contributions make a real difference.

About You

You are a relationship-oriented underwriting professional who brings sound judgment, intellectual curiosity, and genuine enthusiasm for business development. You are energized by broker engagement, enjoy solving complex risk challenges, and take pride in contributing to a high-performing, inclusive team. You balance analytical rigor with an entrepreneurial mindset and understand how disciplined underwriting and strong broker relationships drive profitable portfolio growth.

We are looking for candidates who meet these requirements:

  • Five or more years of Professional Liability underwriting experience, including meaningful, hands-on experience with Architects & Engineers or Construction Professional Liability
  • Demonstrated experience underwriting construction-related professional risks, such as architects and engineers, contractors, design-build firms, construction managers, project owners, or construction consultants
  • Ability to review and interpret construction contracts and professional services agreements, identifying material professional liability exposures with confidence
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate complex risks, analyze claims experience and financial information, assess pricing adequacy, and make sound, well-reasoned underwriting decisions
  • Established broker relationships with retail or wholesale brokers active in Architects & Engineers, Construction Professional Liability, or related professional liability lines, with a track record of developing and growing profitable partnerships
  • Working knowledge of primary and excess Professional Liability structures
  • Strong negotiation and communication skills, including the ability to clearly articulate underwriting positions and decision rationale to brokers, clients, and internal stakeholders
  • Willingness to travel for broker meetings, client engagements, and industry events

These are additional nice to haves:

  • Experience underwriting both annual practice and project-specific Construction PI risks
  • Familiarity with contractors' professional liability, protective professional indemnity solutions, or owner-focused project coverage
  • Experience working across admitted and surplus lines markets
  • Miscellaneous Professional Liability underwriting experience or a strong interest in developing expertise in this area
  • Comfort operating in a fast-paced, matrixed, global organization and collaborating across functions and geographies

Our company has a hybrid work model where the expectation is that you will be in the office at least three days per week.

The estimated base salary range for this position is $168,000 to $252,000 . The specific salary offered for this, or any given role will take into account a number of factors including but not limited to job location, scope of role, qualifications, complexity/specialization/scarcity of talent, experience, education, and employer budget. At Swiss Re, we take a "total compensation approach" when making compensation decisions. This means that we consider all components of compensation in their totality (such as base pay, short- and long-term incentives, and benefits offered), in setting individual compensation.
