Refrigeration Maintenance Technician

The Refrigeration Maintenance Technician maintains, repairs, and performs preventative maintenance on all refrigeration and air-conditioning systems within the facility. This role supports advanced-level maintenance staff to keep equipment and plant operations running safely, efficiently, and reliably. The technician works with refrigeration, boiler, and airflow systems, performs advanced ammonia-related tasks, and ensures compliance with safety and regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

• Inspect and maintain refrigeration components daily, including compressors, evaporators, valves, filters, and freon units.
• Monitor and maintain boilers, water treatment levels, and airflow systems to ensure efficient and safe operation.
• Install and replace pumps, switches, safety controls, solenoids, fuses, and related components.
• Repair and maintain refrigeration pipes and fittings to prevent leaks and system failures.
• Assist with ordering parts, maintaining inventory, and keeping accurate maintenance and repair records.
• Support major repairs, equipment setup and teardown, and plant construction or modification projects.
• Perform advanced refrigeration tasks such as isolating ammonia lines, replacing valves and pumps, resetting compressors, and calibrating temperature probes and CO? monitors.
• Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean, safe, and organized condition.
• Participate in Hazmat training and assist with Hazmat team operations as needed.
• Train maintenance staff on proper equipment care, operation, and basic troubleshooting.
• Read and interpret manuals, diagrams, schematics, and blueprints to complete maintenance and repair work.
• Complete work orders accurately and follow written, oral, or diagram-based instructions.
• Apply troubleshooting and problem-solving skills to diagnose issues with refrigeration, HVAC, boiler, and related systems.
• Use basic computer skills and maintenance software modules to document work and access technical information.
• Follow all company policies, safety rules, and OSHA regulations to promote a safe work environment.
• Use required personal protective equipment, including Air Purifying Respirators (APR) and Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) when necessary.
• Perform preventive maintenance on refrigeration, HVAC, and boiler systems to minimize downtime and extend equipment life.
• Collaborate with other maintenance technicians and departments to support continuous, efficient plant operations.
• Perform other maintenance-related duties as assigned.

Essential Skills

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum 2 years of related experience in refrigeration or industrial maintenance.
• Ability to read and interpret manuals, diagrams, schematics, and blueprints.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills for refrigeration, HVAC, and boiler systems.
• Knowledge of refrigeration systems, including compressors, evaporators, valves, and refrigerants.
• Knowledge of boiler systems and related water treatment requirements.
• Knowledge of ammonia compressors and ammonia-based refrigeration systems.
• Ability to wear and operate an Air Purifying Respirator (APR) and Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA); HAZMAT certifiable.
• Ability and willingness to obtain a boiler license.
• Advanced electrical and mechanical maintenance experience.
• Competence in completing work orders and following written, oral, or diagram-based instructions.
• Basic math skills, including the ability to calculate proportions, percentages, area, and volume.
• Mechanical aptitude with a willingness to expand skills through on-the-job and formal training.
• Completion or willingness to complete OSHA-required courses.
• Basic computer skills, including use of maintenance software modules.
• Ability and willingness to obtain a forklift license.
• Consistent compliance with all safety policies and OSHA regulations.
• Ability to perform physical tasks such as frequent standing, walking, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and handling tools and equipment.
• Ability to lift and move up to 25 lbs occasionally, up to 50 lbs frequently, and up to 150 lbs with assistance.
• Sufficient vision for close, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Associate degree in a maintenance trade is preferred.
• Experience with refrigeration maintenance in an industrial or plant environment.
• Hands-on experience with ammonia and boiler systems maintenance.
• Experience with HVAC equipment, HVAC maintenance, and air conditioning systems.
• Skill in installation, service, and repair of refrigeration equipment and cooling systems.
• Experience with preventive maintenance programs and maintenance technician duties.
• Fabrication skills for basic repairs and equipment modifications.
• Electrical skills related to compressors, controls, and safety devices.
• Familiarity with EPA regulations and refrigerant handling; EPA Universal certification is highly valuable.
• Ability to interpret and work from blueprints and technical drawings.
• Experience troubleshooting refrigeration systems, compressors, and related components.
• Comfort working with cooling systems, refrigerants, and refrigeration system components.
• Willingness to participate in ongoing training, including HAZMAT and safety courses.

Work Environment

This role operates in a combination of office and plant settings, working directly with refrigeration, HVAC, ammonia, and boiler systems. You will be exposed to a variety of conditions, including warm, cold, wet, dry, and foggy environments as you move throughout the facility. The position typically follows a MondayFriday 8-hour day schedule in maintenance. The role requires regular use of hand tools, power tools, maintenance equipment, and computer-based maintenance software. Personal protective equipment is required, including a bump cap, safety glasses or goggles, ear protection, hair and beard nets as applicable, gloves, and safety footwear. At times, you will also use respiratory protection such as APR and SCBA when working with ammonia or other hazardous materials. The work involves frequent standing, walking, climbing, stooping, kneeling, and handling tools, with lifting requirements up to 50 lbs frequently and up to 150 lbs with assistance.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $75000.00 - $100000.00/yr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
