Job Description Overview

The speech pathologist is responsible for organizing and implementing a therapy program to meet the needs of speech, language, communication, and hearing-impaired students and meeting the duties of teaching whatever techniques are appropriate to the nature of the disability.

Qualifications

• Current Illinois Professional Educator License
• Endorsements: Teaching or Non-Teaching SLP Endorsement
• Master's Degree in Speech and Language Pathology from an ISBE Approved Program including the required Clinical Practicum Hours
• Successful completion of required Praxis Exam
• Knowledge of Illinois Speaking and Listening Learning Standards
• Knowledge of developmentally appropriate instructional strategies
• Knowledge of technology-based activities that assist and facilitate student progress.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaborate with colleagues and team members.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing

Principal Duties & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

• Prepare educational plans annually for each student based on individually assessed needs in accordance with district procedures
• Prepare therapy plans for each student identified with an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) containing Speech and Language goals.
• Provide appropriate schedules for students receiving services and involve school personnel as required
• Conduct speech and language screenings for students when requested
• Provide diagnostic/evaluation testing for students identified at-risk for speech and language deficits
• Participate in the in-school staffing and screening processes as appropriate
• Participate on evaluation teams for speech, language, communication, and hearing-impaired students as appropriate
• Participate in Preschool Screenings at the request of the Director of Special Education
• Support students' behavior implementing PBIS and individual behavior plans, and when necessary, administer crisis intervention for students across educational settings
• Develop and maintain IEPs for assigned students and ensure that appropriate and necessary data is collected and articulated to parents and school personnel
• Collect progress monitoring data and provide goal progress updates as required
• Meet with the IEP team, including parents, to discuss their children's progress and to determine priorities for their children and their individualized educational needs
• Administer appropriate assessments as required at the local and state levels
• Collaborate with classroom teachers on the goals and objectives of the speech program and ways of supporting those goals in the school setting
• Consult with the classroom teacher as requested concerning any educational needs of students
• Support teachers with instructional ideas, modifications or accommodations that are appropriate for students to access general education instruction
• Maintain accurate and complete student records and prepare student reports as required by laws, district policies, and administrative regulations
• Support implementation of interventions consistent with the Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) for non-IEP students
• Serve as the case manager, LEA, and/or member of a multidisciplinary team as appropriate
• Assist in preparation of data for local, state, and federal reports
• Maintain professional competence by participating in staff development activities, curriculum development meetings, and other professional opportunities
• Performs other duties as may, from time to time, be assigned by an administrator

Physical Requirements

• Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with students, other faculty, staff, and parents as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle, or feel objects and controls
• The position also entails significant walking, bending, standing, stooping, and possible physical interventions in order to maintain a safe learning environment
• The employee should have the physical capabilities to perform all job functions
