Community Response Coordinator

$72.21k - $81.46k
Full-time

Cornell University

This position is located on the Cornell University Campus in Ithaca, New York.

No Visa sponsorship available for this position.

Who we are:

Located in Ithaca, N.Y., Cornell University is a bold, innovative, inclusive, and dynamic teaching and research university where staff, faculty, and students alike are challenged to make an enduring contribution to the betterment of humanity. Cornell University is one of the largest and most diverse institutions in the Ivy League. We are a community of 22,000 students and more than 10,000 faculty and staff members representing more than 80 countries and hundreds of disciplines—global cultures, backgrounds, experiences, perspectives, and ideas.

The Division of Public Safety (DPS) is a group of public safety units that work collaboratively with our community to keep Cornell a safe and secure campus to learn and live. It is comprised of the Public Safety 911 Communications Center, the Cornell University Police Department, the Office of Emergency Management, the Clery Compliance Office, the Access Control Program, the Community Response Team, and the Public Safety Ambassadors.

The Community Response Team is a unit within the Division of Public Safety. This team works in concert with other emergency response resources such as Cornell Emergency Management Services, Cornell Environment Health & Safety, Cornell EMS, Cornell Public Safety Communications Center, and the Cornell University Police. The team is housed with other first response resources in the Division of Public Safety.

*This position may require evenings, weekends, and holidays as business needs require.

What you will do:
You will be a part of a team of Community Response Coordinators and clinicians who provide first responder behavioral health services and facilitate resource connection in partnership with individuals in crisis on Cornell’s Ithaca campus. This position will respond to calls for service, conduct risk and safety assessments, make appropriate referrals and handoffs to appropriate wraparound university, city, and county services.

The Community Response Team plays a key role across Cornell’s health and safety crisis response infrastructure of prioritizing the diversion of individuals in emotional distress or crisis from unnecessary hospital transportation and facilitating their connection to supportive resources. Community Response Coordinators aim to serve a broad range of individuals in crisis situations and collaborate within the campus' larger system of care to address the needs of community members, creating an intermediary level between current structures that appropriately balance the response with the need.

While position responsibilities vary, every member of our community is expected to foster a culture of belonging and a healthy work environment by communicating across differences; being cooperative, collaborative, open, and welcoming; showing respect, compassion, and empathy; engaging and supporting others regardless of background or perspective; speaking up when others are being excluded or treated inappropriately; and supporting work/life integration of oneself and others.

Who you are:
You are a positive, customer service orientated person who takes pride in providing prompt, courteous service to all. You possess exceptional interpersonal skills, empathy and openness to new ideas and perspectives on a wide range of topics. Additionally, you exercise sound judgement and decision making with urgent and sensitive information. You have strong communication skills and build effective working relationships with a broad range of individuals and organizations. You will have knowledge of collaborative techniques and coordinated community response models.

Some other important qualifications for the position include:

  • Bachelor’s degree (in social work, psychology, or another field related to human services and health); and 2 to 4 years relevant experience (in social services, mental health care, domestic violence or sexual assault support, or similar health field) or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work an evening schedule and weekends, and holidays (when business needs require).
  • Exemplify high ethical standards, reasoning skills, and judgment in all aspects of the work responsibilities.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid NYS Driver’s License. Out-of-state employees must obtain and show proof of a NYS license within 30 days of starting employment.
  • Experience working with inclusion, belonging, and wellbeing programs.
  • Experience working directly with people from various socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Ability to serve as an advocate for individuals from a broad range of backgrounds.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Although the role is non-clinical, clinical training is valued for its relevance to trauma-informed care, behavioral assessments, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Possession of any of the following licenses or certifications: Licensed Master of Social Work (LMSW), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC)
  • Master’s degree in social work/mental health, student affairs/development, health & human services, or similar field.
  • Experience with:
    • Higher education and/or with youth in crisis, mental health and/or wellness, Sexual assault survivors/victims, Human services case management, Emergency medical services, and/or law enforcement agencies.
  • Bilingual and/or Multilingual.

Candidates are encouraged to apply even if they do not meet every preferred qualification.

Experience gained prior to licensure - paid and volunteer - will also be considered when assessing qualifications.
