Job Summary:


The Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department (ED) provides advanced nursing care to adult and pediatric patients in a high-volume, Level I trauma acute care hospital. This role involves managing critical and complex cases including cardiac, neurological, orthopedic, respiratory, psychiatric, and pediatric emergencies. The nurse is responsible for patient assessments, cardiac monitoring, IV therapy, medication administration, emergency response, and collaboration with interdisciplinary teams. A minimum of two years' experience in emergency nursing and required certifications are essential for success.

Responsibilities:

• Perform comprehensive patient assessments and triage in the emergency setting.
• Interpret and manage cardiac dysrhythmias and conduct 12-lead EKGs.
• Administer blood products, start IVs, perform phlebotomy, and manage continuous IV sedation and emergency medications including vasopressors and procedural sedation.
• Manage neurological emergencies including stroke (CVA), spinal cord injury, and traumatic brain injury cases.
• Apply and manage orthopedic splints and support musculoskeletal injuries.
• Provide specialized pediatric emergency care including asthma, seizures, infections, and abuse identification.
• Manage psychiatric emergencies including acute psychosis, drug overdose, violent behavior, and suicidal patients.
• Perform respiratory emergency interventions such as chest tube insertion/management and intubation.
• Follow isolation precautions and emergency department triage protocols.
• Document patient care and interventions using Cerner electronic medical records.
• Collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams to ensure comprehensive patient care.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Active Registered Nurse license in Illinois or in application process with ETA to apply.
• Minimum 2 years of Emergency Department nursing experience.
• Certifications: ACLS, BLS, PALS, and TNCC.
• Proficient in cardiac monitoring, dysrhythmia management, IV therapy, phlebotomy, and emergency medication administration.
• Experience with Cerner electronic health record system.
• Strong clinical skills in adult and pediatric emergency nursing.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Experience in a Level I trauma center or Magnet hospital setting.
• Additional certifications or training related to critical care or trauma nursing.

Special Considerations:

• Work is based in a combined adult/pediatric emergency department with a daily census of approximately 175 patients.
• No on-call requirement.
• Floating outside scope is not expected.
• Must be able to work every other weekend.
• Parking permit required but provided at no cost.
• General emergency department environment with high acuity and fast pace.

Scheduling:

• Shift options include 4x12-hour shifts or 3x12-hour shifts (1900-0730).
• Schedule requests can be discussed with the manager to accommodate block scheduling.
• Return to office (RTO) restrictions ideally no more than 5 days.
• Guaranteed hours subject to client call-offs with specific billing policies for cancellations.
