U.S. Bank is seeking a lead software engineer to help drive large-scale modernization initiatives across critical banking technology platforms. You'll work with architects and engineering teams to transform complex technical strategies into secure, scalable, production-ready solutions that deliver business value at scale.

This is a hands-on technical leadership role. You'll help teams navigate complexity, guide implementation decisions, solve challenging technical problems, and contribute directly when needed. Success comes from technical credibility, strong collaboration, and a passion for helping teams succeed.

You'll review designs, mentor engineers, troubleshoot critical issues, build proof-of-concepts, and help delivery teams move from ideas to outcomes. If you're the person people call when something is complicated, unclear, broken, or stuck, you'll fit right in.

Key Responsibilities

• Partner with architects and engineering teams to translate solution designs into practical implementation strategies.
• Guide teams through technical decisions, implementation challenges, and modernization efforts.
• Design, develop, and support scalable, secure, and resilient applications, services, and APIs.
• Review designs, code, and implementation plans to promote quality, reliability, maintainability, and security.
• Collaborate across engineering, product, architecture, and platform teams to deliver technical solutions.
• Identify and mitigate technical risks, dependencies, and implementation gaps before they affect delivery.
• Provide hands-on technical leadership through proof-of-concepts, code reviews, troubleshooting, and implementation support.
• Support modernization involving cloud-native platforms, APIs, microservices, event-driven architectures, and enterprise integrations.
• Promote engineering excellence through testing, automation, observability, resiliency, and operational practices.
• Mentor engineers and contribute reusable patterns and guidance that improve delivery across teams.

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
• 8 years of software engineering experience building and supporting enterprise applications.
• 5 years of experience with Java and Spring Boot.
• Experience delivering complex technical solutions across multiple teams or systems.
• Experience partnering with architects and technical leaders on large-scale initiatives.
• Strong design, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Skills

• Strong expertise in Java, Spring Boot, and modern backend development.
• Experience with APIs, microservices, distributed systems, and event-driven architectures.
• Experience with Kafka or similar messaging technologies.
• Experience with Kubernetes, Docker, cloud-hosted applications, and containerized deployments.
• Experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL, Oracle, or SQL Server.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines and engineering automation.
• Knowledge of observability, monitoring, resiliency, security, and operational excellence.
• Familiarity with OpenAPI, Swagger, and API-first development.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Ability to influence technical direction without formal management authority.
