Fiber Technician II

Job Summary Fiber Technician is responsible for all aspects of fiber, including installation, termination, testing, and splicing. Job Duties and Responsibilities Cabling & Termination: basic copper termination skills; install a work area outlet for floor, modular furniture, and wall (terminate CAT 3 & CAT 5 jacks, mount faceplates, surface mount boxes); adhere to IES COMMUNICATIONS labeling standards. Build closets (mount and install backboards, cross‑connects, racks, patch panels, fiber optic, and hardware). Install grounding for racks, equipment, and cable as required. Complete all IDC connections (terminate 110/66 blocks and patch panels). Perform testing for continuity on horizontal and riser cable using volt‑ohmmeter, troubleshoot opens, crosses, shorts and transpose pairs. Install LC, SC, ST, FC, FDDI, SMA, and MPO/MTP connectors for multimode & single‑mode fiber. Terminate simplex & duplex jumper cord. Terminate & breakout outside plant (loose tube) fiber (e.g. Corning/Commscope, 3DNX). Terminate indoor tight buffered multimode and single‑mode fiber. Install fan‑out kits including buffer tube. Calculate end‑to‑end loss budgets in accordance with TIA/EIA standards. Documentation: complete all IES paperwork accurately and on time, including timesheets, material transfers, work orders, change orders, job blog, tool transfers, and others as required. Testing: test using OTDR and Fluke DTX 180. Troubleshoot using OTDR to identify and correct problems end‑to‑end. Network‑wide Splicing: perform mechanical and fusion splicing with all types of fiber cable. Perform building entrance splices, maintenance space, and direct buried splices. Complete any other duties as assigned. Physical and Mental Requirements Self‑motivated, positive, professional, with project process improvement mindset. Ability to act as company liaison with customer representatives. Proven problem‑solving, critical thinking, and effective communication skills. Work at heights, off ladder, confined spaces; lift up to 50 pounds, move up to 75 pounds. Visually and audibly detect colors, small print, audible signals. Travel within branch or regional territories as needed. Regular attendance required. Education, Certification, License, and Skill Requirements High School diploma or GED equivalent. Proficiency with listed tools (screwdriver, drywall saw, torpedo level, tape measure, snips, pliers, hammer, wrench set, cable stripper, flashlight, gloves, punch tool, combo crimp tool, Krone/3M/BIX). Proficient at terminating all connector types and methods for SMF and MMF systems (Unicam, anaerobic, heat‑cure). Experience testing & troubleshooting MMF & SMF systems (OTDR & PMLS). Ability to meet IES driving standards policy. 3–5 years of fiber experience preferred. Industry certifications (Corning/FOA) preferred. Data center installation experience preferred. Mechanical and fusion splice experience preferred. OSP / confined space entry experience preferred. Career Path Lead Communications Technician. Compensation: $26.00–$28.00 per hour. Qualifications Valid driver’s license and good driving record. Own vehicle (truck, van, or SUV). Experience in fiber splicing. Extensive knowledge of CATV equipment. 2–4 years plant maintenance background or prior fiber optic experience or equivalent technical schooling. Basic knowledge of fiber optic systems, RF plant, and test equipment. Ability to read and understand manufacturer’s manuals for electronic equipment. Operate highly specialized test and fiber optic splicing equipment. Self‑starter, motivated, able to work independently. Minimum 4–6 years of experience.
