Registered Nurse, Pulmonary, Per Diem

Position Title: Staff Nurse (Pulmonary – per diem) Department: Pulmonary Schedule: Part Time, per diem Employer: Boston Medical Center – a large safety‑net hospital and teaching affiliate of Boston University School of Medicine. Position Summary The registered nurse adheres to Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing regulations and is responsible for professional performance and direct patient care. The role encompasses assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, evaluation, and coordination of care for patients and families across the healthcare continuum. The nurse is accountable for clinical, educational, quality, and fiscal outcomes under the nursing department’s model of care and agency policies. Core Responsibilities Consistently and effectively utilize all steps of the nursing process to provide timely, safe, efficient and appropriate patient‑centered care. Assess patient and family systematically for overt and covert signs, collect pertinent data, prioritize data, involve patient/family in data collection, and communicate findings clearly and in compliance with department policy. Identify and communicate emergency/crisis situations promptly to the health care team and respond appropriately. Analyze assessment data to determine accurate nursing diagnoses using critical thinking skills. Identify expected outcomes individualized to the patient, develop measurable goals with time estimates, and collaborate with patients, families and team to formulate outcomes. Develop a plan of care that prescribes interventions to attain outcomes, reflecting current nursing standards, policies and available resources. Implement interventions, delegate care appropriately, maintain a safe unit environment, and apply technical skills (IV insertion, phlebotomy, etc.) while administering medications per standards and protocols. Educate patients and families regarding illness, treatments, care plans and health maintenance. In crisis situations, demonstrate decision‑making, re‑prioritize needs, initiate responses, and coordinate team actions. Document all interventions, patient responses, and revisions according to department policy. Reassess patients, evaluate intervention effectiveness, involve stakeholders, revise diagnoses/outcomes/plan, and provide follow‑up care as needed. Education and Experience Nursing degree: Diploma, ASN or BSN (preferred). Ability to obtain BSN within 4 years. Licensed registered nurse in Massachusetts. Current BLS certification; additional certifications may be required for certain practice areas. Minimum 1 year ambulatory care experience; pulmonary experience preferred. Telephone triage experience desirable. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Basic computer proficiency, including EHR use and data interpretation. Effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Organizational skills, ability to prioritize and manage workload efficiently. Multilingual skills beyond English preferred. Clinical experience in pulmonary or allergy preferred. Analytical ability for clinical problem solving and quality improvement. Effective delegation of patient care activities. Physical ability to meet core job responsibilities. Stress management and teamwork skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word). Bilingual candidates encouraged. Compensation Hourly rate: $38.05 – $75.33. Base pay is based on qualifications. Total compensation includes medical, dental, vision, pharmacy benefits, paid time off, 403(b) savings match, and other benefits.
