Role Overview

Our organization is seeking board-certified or board-eligible emergency physicians to join our network of four emergency departments located in central Virginia: Lynchburg General Hospital, Bedford Memorial Hospital, Gretna Medical Center, and Southside Community Hospital.

• Lynchburg General Hospital (Lynchburg, VA)
  • Handles approximately 70,000 patient visits annually with 54 beds.
  • Features a busy community hospital and level 2 trauma center, recognized for its high-quality acute MI and stroke certification programs.
  • Daily physician staffing includes at least two physicians in the department.
  • Shifts are structured in a “waterfall” format to align staffing with patient arrivals, minimizing sign-outs. The first 8 hours focus on patient acuity, followed by selective patient care for the last two hours.
  • Currently designing a new 65-bed Emergency Department.
  • Constructing the first EmPath Unit on the East Coast, a behavioral health care space managed by our behavioral health service, expected to be completed by summer 2023.
• Southside Community Hospital (Farmville, VA)
  • Receives around 30,000 visits per year with 20 beds.
  • Provides 40 hours of physician staffing daily, supplemented by 20 hours of APP coverage.
  • Operates on 10-hour shifts.
• Bedford Memorial Hospital (Bedford, VA)
  • Handles approximately 20,000 visits annually with 14 beds.
  • Offers 12-hour shifts with 24 hours of physician coverage and 20 hours of APP coverage.
• Gretna Medical Center (Gretna, VA)
  • Receives about 25,000 visits per year with 10 beds.
  • Functions as a free-standing emergency department with 24 hours of physician coverage and 20 hours of APP coverage.
  • Operates on 12-hour shifts.

• A collegial environment with a physician-heavy staffing model.
• Equitable standing for all physicians from day one, ensuring no seniority issues regarding scheduling or pay structures.
• A comprehensive orientation period lasting several months, featuring limited night shifts and no solo site responsibilities.
• An active nocturnist program that alleviates night workload for all staff, allowing nocturnists to create their own schedules.
• Options to work only day or evening shifts, with no night shifts required.
• No scheduled on-call duties.
• Diverse work environments, ranging from a busy community trauma center to a single-coverage free-standing ER.
• Guaranteed time off requests for up to 10 days each month.
• Alternating holiday work for Christmas and Thanksgiving, with guaranteed 5 days off surrounding your designated holiday.
• Opportunities for teaching and mentoring, though not mandatory.
• A manageable patient load of 1.7 to 2.2 patients per hour.
• A low cost of living (17% below the national average), a mild climate, and proximity to numerous outdoor, recreational, cultural, and educational activities.

• Completion of a medical degree and residency or fellowship training in emergency medicine.
• MD or DO with certification from an American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) board in the primary specialty. Candidates must be board certified or in the process of obtaining certification.
