Athletic Director and PE Teacher

Position Summary
The Athletic Director and Physical Education Teacher provides leadership, organization, and oversight for all athletic programs and physical education instruction serving students in grades 5–12. This individual is responsible for developing and maintaining a Christ-centered athletic and physical education culture that promotes spiritual growth, sportsmanship, character development, physical fitness, and athletic excellence.
The Athletic Director and Physical Education Teacher works closely with school administration, coaches, students, and parents to ensure the successful operation of all athletic programs, effective physical education instruction, student safety, and compliance with governing athletic organizations.
Essential Responsibilities
Program Administration
- Oversee all middle school and high school athletic programs.
- Develop and maintain athletic schedules, including games, tournaments, practices, and special events.
- Coordinate facility usage for athletic activities and physical education classes.
- Manage athletic calendars and communicate schedules to coaches, students, parents, and administration.
- Assist with the development and administration of the athletic and physical education budgets as assigned.
- Maintain an inventory of athletic and physical education equipment, uniforms, and supplies.
- Ensure that athletic and physical education facilities and equipment are properly maintained and used safely.
Physical Education Instruction
- Plan and teach developmentally appropriate physical education classes for students in grades 5–12.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive physical education curriculum aligned with school goals and applicable academic standards.
- Provide instruction in physical fitness, individual and team sports, movement skills, health-related fitness, cooperation, and sportsmanship.
- Prepare lesson plans that include clear learning objectives, instructional activities, assessments, and accommodations for varying student needs and abilities.
- Teach students the rules, skills, strategies, and safety practices associated with a variety of sports and physical activities.
- Promote lifelong habits of physical fitness, wellness, teamwork, self-discipline, and responsible decision-making.
- Incorporate age-appropriate fitness assessments and help students establish personal fitness goals.
- Assess student participation, skill development, knowledge, effort, and progress using fair and consistent standards.
- Maintain accurate attendance, grade, assessment, and student-progress records.
- Provide timely and constructive feedback to students and communicate academic or behavioral concerns to parents and school leadership.
- Modify instruction and activities as appropriate for students with differing abilities, medical needs, or physical limitations.
- Establish and maintain clear classroom routines, behavioral expectations, and procedures that support a safe and productive learning environment.
- Supervise students closely during classes, transitions, locker-room use, and physical activities.
- Ensure that students use facilities and equipment safely and follow all established safety procedures.
- Collaborate with faculty and administration to support student wellness and the overall academic program.
Compliance and Governance
- Ensure compliance with all rules, regulations, and eligibility requirements established by governing athletic associations and leagues.
- Maintain required records, reports, and documentation for athletic participation.
- Monitor student-athlete eligibility according to school and league standards.
- Stay informed regarding changes to league policies and athletic regulations.
- Follow school policies and applicable requirements related to physical education instruction, student supervision, health, and safety.
- Maintain current knowledge of emergency procedures, injury prevention, concussion protocols, and appropriate responses to student medical needs.
Coach Leadership and Development
- Recruit, recommend, train, and support coaches.
- Provide leadership, mentorship, and evaluation of coaching staff.
- Promote a consistent philosophy of Christian discipleship, sportsmanship, and athletic excellence among all coaches.
- Conduct regular meetings with coaches to communicate expectations, policies, safety procedures, and program goals.
- Ensure that coaches understand and follow school policies, league requirements, and appropriate standards of student supervision and conduct.
Parent and Student Relations
- Serve as the primary liaison between the athletic department and families.
- Communicate athletic policies, physical education expectations, schedules, and opportunities to students and parents.
- Address concerns and conflicts in a professional, Christ-honoring manner.
- Foster positive relationships among coaches, athletes, students, parents, faculty, and school leadership.
- Encourage student participation, personal responsibility, teamwork, and respect for others.
Event Management
- Coordinate home athletic events, including officials, game workers, security, concessions, and facility preparation.
- Ensure a safe and positive environment for athletes, students, staff, and spectators.
- Promote sportsmanship and Christian conduct at all athletic events.
- Oversee the setup, operation, and cleanup of athletic facilities for games, practices, tournaments, and special events.
- Respond appropriately to injuries, emergencies, facility concerns, and other issues that arise during athletic events.
Spiritual Leadership
- Model a personal and growing relationship with Jesus Christ and support the mission, vision, and values of the school.
- Encourage coaches, athletes, and students to pursue Christ-like character through competition, physical activity, teamwork, and service.
- Integrate biblical principles into athletic leadership, physical education instruction, and decision-making.
- Create an environment in which students are treated with dignity, encouraged to use their God-given abilities, and challenged to demonstrate integrity, perseverance, humility, and respect.
- Participate in the spiritual life of the school as expected of faculty and staff.
Additional Responsibilities
- Attend faculty meetings, professional development, parent conferences, school events, and other meetings as required.
- Assist with student supervision and other school duties as assigned.
- Maintain professional communication, confidentiality, and appropriate boundaries with students and families.
- Collaborate with school leadership regarding program goals, staffing needs, facilities, scheduling, and student concerns.
- Perform other duties consistent with the position as assigned by the Head of School or designee.
Qualifications
- A personal and growing relationship with Jesus Christ.
- Agreement with and commitment to the school’s statement of faith, mission, vision, and values
- Bachelor’s degree in physical education, kinesiology, exercise science, education, athletic administration, or a related field preferred.
- Teaching certification or relevant physical education credential preferred.
- Experience teaching physical education to middle school and high school students preferred.
- Experience in coaching, athletic administration, or a related field preferred.
- Strong organizational, leadership, classroom-management, and communication skills.
- Knowledge of athletic program administration and governing athletic regulations.
- Knowledge of age-appropriate physical education practices, fitness principles, sports instruction, and student assessment.
- Ability to plan effective instruction and motivate students with a wide range of interests, abilities, and fitness levels.
- Ability to work effectively with students, parents, coaches, faculty, and school leadership.
- Ability to manage multiple responsibilities, schedules, and deadlines.
- Ability to demonstrate and supervise physical activities safely.
- Current CPR, AED, and first-aid certification, or willingness to obtain certification within the timeframe established by the school.
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Complete and maintain all required TAPPS and CALSA training, certifications, and eligibility requirements.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, demonstrate physical activities, and supervise students for extended periods.
- Ability to work in indoor and outdoor environments and in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to lift, carry, set up, and store athletic or physical education equipment, with reasonable accommodation as needed.
- Ability to respond promptly and appropriately to student injuries, safety concerns, and emergency situations.
