Motor Vehicle Operator

Summary This position is located in Facility Management Service at the VA Maine Healthcare System in Manchester, New Hampshire. The Motor Vehicle Operator safely transports patients, passengers, supplies, equipment, and materials; performs vehicle inspections and minor maintenance; and supports grounds maintenance and snow removal operations. Responsibilities Duties include but are not limited to the following; Assists patients entering and exiting vehicles and safely loads, unloads, and secures wheelchair passengers. Plans routes, follows established schedules, and completes required trip and transportation documentation. Performs daily vehicle safety inspections, routine operator maintenance, and reports mechanical or safety problems. Maintains vehicle cleanliness and ensures required safety equipment is properly used. Operates loaders, dump trucks, tractors, mowers, snowplows, salt spreaders, and other grounds or snow-removal equipment. Performs grounds maintenance duties such as mowing, trimming, raking, weed removal, and snow removal. Loads and unloads supplies, materials, equipment, and other cargo as required. Complies with federal, state, and local traffic laws and established safety procedures. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications To qualify for this position you must meet the following requirements. Must possess a valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL) CDL must have Passenger(P) and Air Brakes endorsements Screen-Out Element: Must have independently operated buses, vans, trucks, ambulances, or similar vehicles to transport passengers, patients, supplies, or equipment safely over public roads in varying traffic and weather conditions. AND PHYSICAL EFFORT: The incumbent is required to assist patients in and out of motor vehicles, ambulances, wheelchair vans, and shuttle buses. The work requires bending, lifting, turning, and frequent use of the arms, legs, hands, and feet, and may involve lifting or moving items weighing 50 pounds or more. The incumbent may sit and drive for extended periods of time, including trips of up to eight hours, and performs strenuous grounds and snow removal duties. WORK CONDITIONS: The incumbent works outside in varying weather conditions, including extreme cold, heat, rain, snow, and ice. Driving is performed in heavy traffic, congested city areas, and over rough, icy, muddy, or otherwise hazardous road conditions. The work may also involve exposure to contaminated materials, including medical waste and supplies. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. Education Additional Information Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
