Environmental Educator

Summary : The Environmental Educator is responsible for delivering environmental education, public programs, camps, tours and outreach activities that support the mission of the John Bunker Sands Wetland Center. This role supports the implementation of high-quality, mission-aligned programming while creating engaging and meaningful experiences for students, educators, families, volunteers, and visitors. The Environmental Educator serves as a representative of JBSWC and helps connect diverse audiences to the Wetland Center’s mission areas of water reuse, water quality and supply, wildlife conservation, and wetland systems.

This position works closely with the Education Supervisor and education team to provide quality environmental education, public engagement, and mission delivery. This position is responsible for program preparation, participant engagement, facility readiness, and the successful delivery of assigned educational experiences while taking ownership of assigned responsibilities and contributing to a collaborative and professional team environment. This position is full-time, Tuesday – Friday 8:00 am – 4:00 pm and Saturday 7:00 am – 4:00 pm, with occasional evenings and special events. The salary range is $39,500 – 45,700/year depending on qualifications and exempt from overtime.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Education Program Delivery

  • Deliver and participate in environmental education programs including school field trips, camps, homeschool programs, tours, outreach programs and public programs.
  • Facilitate curriculum focused on water reuse, water quality and supply, wetland systems, wildlife conservation, birds, plants and environmental stewardship.
  • Adapt teaching methods to accommodate diverse ages, learning styles, abilities, and group sizes.
  • Maintain high standards of educational quality, participant engagement, safety and visitor experience.

Program Preparation & Readiness

  • Prepare and organize educational materials, equipment, learning spaces and supplies for assigned programs.
  • Assist with opening, closing, cleaning, and general upkeep of education facilities and equipment, and program areas.
  • Monitor program supply levels and communicate equipment or resource needs proactively.
  • Ensure assigned program areas are safe, organized, and ready for participant use.

Public Programs & Outreach

  • Serve as a professional and welcoming ambassador for JBSWC when interacting with visitors, students, educators, families, volunteers, and community partners.
  • Support outreach activities, public programs and community engagement efforts that advance the mission of JBSWC.
  • Communicate environmental concepts in an engaging, accessible and appropriate manner.

Collaboration & Support

  • Work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, interns, and education stewards to support successful program delivery.
  • Take ownership of assigned responsibilities and communicate proactively regarding challenges, scheduling conflicts or resource needs.
  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities.
  • Support organizational events, public programs, and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

  • Associate’s degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, Education, Natural Resources, Parks & Recreation, Wildlife Management, or a related field; equivalent experience may be considered.
  • Experience teaching, leading groups, facilitating programs.
  • Strong communication, public speaking and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

Preferred

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Experience in environmental education, outdoor education, interpretation, camps, nature centers, parks, zoos, aquariums or informal education settings.
  • CPR, First Aid, or Wilderness First Aid certification.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Canva, or similar technology platforms.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, wind, rain and uneven terrain.
  • Ability to stand, walk, hike, bend, lift and carry up to 40 pounds.
  • Ability to safely lead groups on trails, boardwalks, and outdoor learning environments.
