Senior Firmware Engineer

Overview The Embedded Software Engineer (ARM) role at Ciena focuses on designing, developing, and maintaining low‑level firmware for next‑generation co‑packaged optical modules. Responsibilities Design, develop, and debug embedded software for photonic ICs. Design and develop firmware for embedded microcontrollers. Read board schematics, triage, and debug low‑level digital circuits. Utilize Test and Measurement equipment such as oscilloscopes and logic analyzers. Review code written by peers and provide feedback to ensure best practices. Collaborate with functional teams to understand test requirements. Contribute to documentation and update content as requirements change. Qualifications Bachelor's or Master’s in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent practical work experience. Minimum of 5 years of experience with embedded microcontrollers, with a strong focus on ARM microcontrollers. Expertise in C/C++ programming for embedded systems. Strong understanding of OOP design and concepts. Demonstrated ability to debug complex hardware/software interaction issues, including reading schematics and datasheets. Comprehensive knowledge of OS coding techniques, IP protocols, interfaces (I2C, SPI), and hardware subsystems. Nice to Haves Experience developing medium‑sized Python packages. Experience with RTOS such as Zephyr. Experience with development tools: CMake, VSCode, Git, JIRA, Confluence. Compensation & Benefits Pay Range: $101,500 – $162,100 USD annually. Non‑Sales employees may receive a discretionary incentive bonus; Sales employees may receive a commission.
