The Refrigeration shop installs, operates, maintains, and improves a wide variety of systems such as DX units, environmental chambers, walk‑in coolers and freezers, air dryers, and boiler systems used throughout classrooms, labs, hospital suites, and data centers. Job Summary Performs preventive, predictive, and reactive maintenance on complex refrigeration equipment at a biotechnology/life sciences research and healthcare campus. Supported systems include direct expansion units, environmental chambers, walk‑in coolers and freezers, air dryers, ice machines, packaged units, CRAC units, dehumidification systems, refrigerated scientific equipment, ultra‑low and cryogenic equipment, and boiler systems. Tasks involve troubleshooting control circuits, replacing compressors, repairing refrigerant leaks, replacing fan/blower motors, changing mechanical and electrical controls, maintaining EPA refrigerant logs, calibrating boilers, and preparing boilers for state inspections. May also perform equipment replacements, installations, and construction or renovation work with quality documentation. Responsibilities Perform preventive, predictive, and reactive maintenance on refrigeration and boiler systems. Troubleshoot and repair complex control circuits, compressors, refrigerant leaks, and electrical controls. Change out mechanical components such as fan motors and adjust refrigeration systems for optimal performance. Maintain EPA refrigerant management logs and prepare boilers for state inspections. Engage in equipment replacement and installation projects, including sheet‑metal fabrication and ductwork modification. Complete accurate service documentation and record measurements. Work on construction or renovation projects, providing written comments that may not meet plans, specifications, codes, or guidelines. Requirements High school diploma or equivalency, or demonstrated possession of required competencies. Valid North Carolina Driver’s License or ability to obtain one before hire date. EPA 608 universal refrigerant certification. Ability to move objects up to 65 lbs. and handle large equipment with hand trucks. Ability to work from ladders, outdoors in adverse weather, and in high containment labs requiring baseline blood draw, medical certification, and respirator fit testing. Ability to serve on‑call duty on a rotating basis, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Experience troubleshooting and repairing large DX and refrigeration equipment, reading mechanical and electrical diagrams, HVAC service and installation, and documenting service work accurately. Physical and Safety Requirements Butt up to 65 lbs. and use hand trucks or general handling equipment. Work on ladders for extended periods and outdoors under varying conditions. Wear respirator and other required PPE, including safety shoes, eye protection, and arc‑flash gear. Handle health‑care exposures (bloodborne pathogens, hazardous materials) and respond to on‑call events. Sign‑On Bonus Eligibility A sign‑on bonus of up to $5,639 is available for selected applicants, paid in two installments within 12 months of hire: $2,819.50 within 30 days of hire, and $2,819.50 12 months after hire. Eligibility applies to newly hired permanent full‑time or permanent part‑time employees (over 20 hrs/wk). The bonus is contingent on budget and final eligibility determination as of hire; recipients must sign a Pay‑Back Agreement. Eligible candidates must have no state‑government employment in the last 12 months, excluding judicial, executive branch, and university system positions under the State Human Resources Act.
