A Day in the Life of a Dental Hygienist at Mitten Kids Dentistry

On any given day at Mitten Kids you can expect to encounter the following:

• Arriving at 7:30-7:40 am to be ready to go at 7:50 am for our morning huddle with the team.
• Patient care begins at 8:00 am.
• Complete patient chart reviews to identify any pre-existing treatment needs or concerns.
• Complete dental hygiene instructions educating parents and patients on oral hygiene, dietary instructions, and other oral health topics.
• Scale, polish, and apply fluoride to patient's teeth.
• Process digital x rays.
• Record evaluation of periodontal conditions, occlusal relations and extent of prophylaxis on dental chart to ensure a complete diagnosis and proper treatment plan by the dentist.
• Update patient's medical history if necessary.
• Inspect patient's oral cavity and chart lesions, existing restorations and missing teeth.
• Evaluate gingival health and health of all oral tissues.
• Educate patient's or parents of patients on the importance of preventive care, the disease process and the role of bacteria; provide appropriate educational literature and instruction on home care.
• Apply pit and fissure sealants and or silver diamide fluoride.
• Assist doctor during the clinical examinations and record findings and recommendations.
• Complete clinical notes and bill out treatment using Open Dental practice management software.
• Prepare hygiene operatories including, but not limited to, set-up, decontamination, sterilizing and sharpening all instruments, cleaning handpieces and room, restocking supplies.
• Provide excellent customer service support to patients by escorting them to and from the hygiene area.
• Coordinating with the administrative team to schedule patient's next treatment appointment.
• Perform other office duties when not seeing a patient, as to include, but not limited to, cleaning dental hygiene equipment and hygiene area, stocking shelves and cabinets with supplies.
• Patient care is usually complete by 3:00pm allowing you to complete your clinical notes for the day, as well as future chart reviews, and be done by 3:30!

• You are looking for a position Tuesday-Thursday and every other Friday. This will be primarily at our Grand Rapids office.
