Registered Nurse (RN) - Med Surg/Telemetry

Job Description

The Registered Nurse (RN) in Med Surg/Telemetry is responsible for delivering high-quality patient care through the nursing process, which includes assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The RN will work under the supervision of the unit Supervisor, Manager, or Director and is tasked with guiding patient teaching and overseeing the activities of ancillary personnel while adhering to professional nursing standards and policies.

Primary Responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive assessments of the physical, psychological, and social needs of patients upon admission, with timely documentation.
• Formulate individualized care plans based on patient assessments, and initiate care plans within 24 hours of admission.
• Implement care plans and document the effectiveness in medical records, revising plans as needed at least every 24 hours.
• Foster a compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patients and their families.
• Encourage patient independence by establishing care goals and providing education on conditions, medications, and self-care.
• Ensure quality of care by adhering to therapeutic standards and making necessary adjustments based on health outcomes and patient needs.
• Utilize multidisciplinary team strategies to resolve patient problems and meet care needs.
• Maintain adherence to infection control policies, medication regulations, and safety protocols.
• Ensure continuity of care through effective communication and documentation regarding patient status and needs.
• Collaborate with healthcare teams to build rapport and solve problems collectively.
• Empower team members through effective delegation and communication of responsibilities.
• Recognize changes in patient status and provide appropriate interventions and documentation.
• Deliver ongoing patient and family education tailored to daily assessments and recovery progression.
• Prioritize care based on individual patient needs and conditions.
• Assist in coordinating discharge needs through appropriate referrals and collaboration with case management.
• Engage in continuing education and participate in performance improvement initiatives to enhance healthcare delivery.
• Communicate unit issues through the appropriate chain of command and participate in problem-solving processes.
• Demonstrate a strong focus on patient safety and effective use of technology and equipment.
• Support and comply with hospital mission, values, and nursing standards while maintaining confidentiality.
• Provide age-appropriate care by recognizing developmental needs and adjusting care accordingly.
• Carry out other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• 2+ years of experience in Med Surg.
• Experience floating to PCU is required.
• Proficiency in telemetry is mandatory.
• COVID vaccine required; exemptions allowed.
• Must be able to read and interpret heart rhythms accurately.
• Must pass a dysrhythmia test prior to working on the unit.
• Active American Heart Association BLS and ACLS certification required.
• Must hold a current and unrestricted Michigan nursing license.
