Histotechnician

Under direct supervision from anatomical pathology management, performs all aspects of routine histology to prepare patient tissue samples for the Pathologist to perform microscopic examination to render a diagnosis.

Key responsibilities include:

• Processing surgical specimens by loading, unloading and programming the tissue processors.
• Embedding tissue samples according to department specific protocols with proper orientation.
• Preparing quality slides following departmental microtomy protocols.
• Performing routine H&E and special staining, performed both automated and manually.
• Accurately accessioning specimens into Laboratory Information System.
• Performing frozen sections as needed.
• Using and maintaining laboratory equipment, not limited to, but including: tissue processors, stainers, coverslippers, microtomes, computers and printers.
• Completing microscopic quality control review of slides.
• Performing ancillary tasks such as filing, cleaning and maintaining inventory of supplies.
• Monitoring pending work, resolving specimen issues and troubleshooting laboratory equipment.
• Maintaining equipment and temperature quality control logs.
• Assisting in training new team members and students as needed.
• Preparing cases for send out to reference labs for specialized testing.
• Performing additional tasks as assigned.

Work experience:

Education: Must satisfy one (1) of the following ASCP Histotechnician eligibility routes:

• Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician program within the last five years.
• An Associate's Degree with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), which may be obtained within, or in addition to, the associate's degree.

Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of experience working in a laboratory setting. Experience as a histotechnician or histology lab assistant is preferred. Has basic knowledge of theory and concept of immunohistochemistry.

Certification: HT/HTL (ASCP) certificate or eligible for certification preferred.
