Our paraprofessionals are essential in providing diverse support to students while fostering a nurturing and inclusive learning environment.

Position: Paraprofessional

Location: Center Woods Elementary School

Hours: 7.5 hours per day

To support student learning and implement student educational programs as directed by the special education and regular education teachers.

Reports to: Building level administrators including student services or special education administrators

Equipment Used: Current technology

Qualifications:

• Possess a high school degree or GED equivalent
• Paraeducator II certification is preferred
• Demonstrate a knowledge of and the ability to assist in instruction
• Knowledge of the learning process
• Ability to foster and sustain students' interest in the activity and promote skill development
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status.

Duties:

• Work with the classroom teacher, special educators, therapists and other professionals to implement educational programs for students.
• Work with individual students and small or large groups as directed by the classroom teacher or special educator.
• Build and maintain productive learning relationships with assigned students.
• Model behaviors, attitudes, and communication skills based on mutual regard and respect.
• Assist teachers in modifying classroom activities and implementing accommodations to meet individual student needs.
• Complete any assigned administrative duties to ensure the safe and effective flow of the school day for all students including supervising students on the playground, in the lunchroom, in the library, and at other locations on the school campus as assigned.
• Communicate with the teacher and administrators about the progress and behavior of students as appropriate.
• Timely completion of administrative paperwork such as timesheets, Medicaid Transaction logs, etc.
• Refer parent concerns and questions to the classroom teacher, special educator or administrator.
• Participate in in-service training programs as requested.
• Complete other tasks as assigned by the case manager and/or the administration to support student learning, such as supervising study halls and proctoring standardized tests.
• Assist in activities such as reading with students, leading review activities, playing games, helping with assignments, assisting at the computer and completing projects.
• Assist teacher with the preparation of activities and materials including copying worksheets, making games, creating bulletin boards, developing visual aids, assembling materials, and other related tasks as long as student IEP's are not adversely impacted.
• Assist with field trips as needed, assist substitute teachers when appropriate, and assume responsibility for students in the classroom in emergencies.
• Supervise occasional coverage of classes when teacher attends meetings as long as student IEP's are not adversely impacted.
• Maintain strict confidentiality regarding students and employees of the school and district.
• Perform other duties/tasks consistent with the goals of this position as determined by building administration.

Paraeducators assigned to special education have the following additional responsibilities:

• Work with the classroom teacher, special educators, therapists and other team members to implement an educational program for an individual student as outlined in the IEP.
• Assist teachers in modifying classroom activities to meet individual needs.

Paraeducators assigned to work in special education intensive programs (i.e. Class I & II, SMILE, SOAR) with students on IEPs shall have the following additional responsibilities:

• Give support/assistance and monitor students in unified/special/elective classes, school assemblies, etc.
• Provide inclusionary support and, when appropriate, plan with teachers.
• Assist with bathroom duties (may include lifting and diapering), and provide hygiene assistance/cueing for students requiring such support.
• For students with physical disabilities or medical needs, assist with feeding and/or mobility and dispense or administer medication.
• Implement Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) Behavioral Support Plans to assist students with intensive needs as directed.
• Provide support in job settings/vocational programming, in accordance with students' IEP goals and transition plans. This may include accompanying students to and from job sites on school provided transportation.

Fulfill all other duties/tasks consistent with the goals of this position as determined by the building level administrators including student services or special education administrators.

Performance of these responsibilities will be evaluated annually by the Principal or his/her designee.
