Staff Accountant

Job Title: Staff Accountant Department: Finance Status: Regular, full-time (with benefits) (IN-PERSON ROLE) Reports to: Senior Controller Building Bridges Across the River (Building Bridges) is a nonprofit organization serving residents East of the Anacostia River, focusing on arts, culture, economic opportunity, education, recreation, health, and well‑being. The office is located on the campus of THEARC in Southeast DC. Principal Responsibilities Processing accounts payable and receivable transactions Maintaining accurate financial records and data entry Administering bi‑weekly payroll processing and related tax filings Assisting with monthly financial close processes Preparing routine financial reports and reconciliations Supporting the annual audit and tax preparation process Areas of Focus and Key Tasks Process accounts payable including invoice coding, approval routing, and payment processing Manage accounts receivable including invoicing, payment tracking, and collections follow‑up Administer bi‑weekly payroll processing, including time sheet review, benefit deductions, and paystub distribution Process payroll tax filings and payments Prepare and issue 1099 forms for independent contractors Perform routine bank and balance sheet account reconciliations Assist with monthly financial close tasks as assigned Maintain organized digital and physical filing systems for financial documents Support preparation for annual audit by gathering requested documentation Generate standard financial reports for department managers Maintain vendor records and W-9 documentation Process employee expense reports and reimbursements Track and monitor outstanding receivables Assist with budget preparation by providing historical financial data Perform other duties as assigned by the CFO Qualifications & Requirements Associate's or Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field 3+ years of accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit setting Experience with payroll processing and related tax compliance Proficiency with accounting software (experience with Sage Intacct a plus) Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data entry and financial record keeping Knowledge of basic accounting principles and procedures Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple deadlines Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel Strong communication skills, both written and verbal Ability to maintain confidentiality when dealing with sensitive information Problem‑solving abilities and analytical thinking skills Team‑oriented with ability to work collaboratively Demonstrated reliability and dependability Knowledge of and commitment to the communities served in Wards 7 and 8 preferred Compensation & Benefits This is a full‑time position with a salary of $60,000–$75,000.
