Job Details Job ID: 5704110 Application Deadline: Posted until filled Posted: May 11, 2026 4:00 AM (UTC) Starting Date: Immediately Job Description Department: Transportation Reports To: Executive Director of Auxiliary Services Position Type: Full-Time 12 Month Employee Salary Grade: Admin IV Position Purpose The Director of Transportation provides strategic leadership, planning, and oversight of all district transportation operations, including regular education, exceptional children (EC), contracted services, routing, fleet management, and activity buses. The Director ensures safe, efficient, and reliable transportation services while maintaining full compliance with all applicable laws, policies, and regulations. This role provides strategic leadership and operational oversight, including developing systems to maintain continuity of service, such as securing substitute drivers and coordinating coverage for daily absences. Essential Job Functions Leadership & Personnel Management Provides overall leadership of the Transportation Department Leads recruitment, selection, evaluation, and retention of transportation staff Supervises all transportation employees including drivers, monitors, supervisors, routing staff, and support personnel Oversees employee performance, discipline, professional growth, and personnel actions Develops and implements staff training and skill development programs Operational Oversight & Service Delivery Plans, directs, and evaluates all transportation operations, including routing, scheduling, and activity trips Ensures efficient coordination of regular, EC, and contracted transportation services Establishes and maintains systems to ensure uninterrupted service, including coverage for driver absences Oversees daily operations to ensure safe, timely, and efficient transportation services Routing, Technology & Data Systems Oversees implementation and effective use of the Transportation Information Management System (TIMS) or similar system, including development of an accurate and efficient student locator system Ensures accuracy of student assignments, routes, payroll, and operational data Works closely with routing and data staff to maintain accurate records Maintains proficiency in transportation systems and supports staff training BSIP, Data Management & Reporting Oversees compliance with the Business System Informational Portal (BSIP) Ensures accurate and timely data entry, reporting, and record maintenance Assists with maintaining transportation records, including inventory, payroll, routing, EC assignments, and staffing as needed Ensures timely communication of BSIP-related information to mechanics and staff Supports required state reporting and documentation Fleet & Maintenance Coordination Oversees the maintenance and readiness of all transportation vehicles Collaborates with garage staff to ensure vehicles meet safety and inspection standards Coordinates training programs to enhance the skills of maintenance personnel Assists in long-term fleet planning and replacement strategies Safety, Compliance & Efficiency Ensures compliance with all federal, state, and local transportation laws and regulations Oversees safety programs and risk management procedures Ensures compliance with DOT drug and alcohol testing requirements Investigates accidents and incidents and implements corrective actions Works to achieve optimal transportation efficiency ratings as defined by the state Budgeting, Cost Control & Resource Management Develops and implements an effective transportation budgeting process in collaboration with district leadership Oversees purchasing, inventory control, and cost management systems Monitors expenditures and ensures responsible use of resources Identifies opportunities for cost savings and operational improvements Communication & Stakeholder Engagement Serves as liaison between transportation, schools, families, and district leadership Communicates expectations, updates, and operational changes clearly and effectively Resolves concerns and promotes a high level of customer service Cross-Functional Leadership Maintains working knowledge of all transportation office functions Ensures cross-training to support continuity of operations Provides operational support across functions as needed Additional Duties Operates a school bus when necessary to support continuity of service in emergency or high-need situations Participates in district initiatives and planning efforts Performs other duties as assigned Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s in School Administration or related field preferred Minimum 5 years of experience in transportation or a related field, including supervisory experience Experience in school transportation operations and/or school leadership preferred Valid North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements (or ability to obtain) Experience with budgeting, planning, and operational management Strong technical proficiency in transportation and data systems Strong leadership and personnel management skills Extensive knowledge of student transportation systems, laws, and regulations High level of organization and technical proficiency Ability to analyze data and improve operational efficiency Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities Effective communication and interpersonal skills Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment Physical & Cognitive Requirements Ability to perform medium physical work (lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally) Ability to operate school buses and transportation equipment Ability to work in varying environments and conditions Ability to inspect vehicles and ensure safety compliance Ability to communicate clearly and follow detailed instructions Ability to respond effectively in emergency situations Disability Statement Franklin County Schools is an Equal Opportunity Employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, disability, or any other legally protected status in its programs, activities, or employment practices.
