Research Teaching Specialist III (Research Tech Developing Infectious Disease Diagnostics) New Jersey's academic health center, Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS), integrates education, clinical care, and research to improve human health. This position is located within the Public Health Research Institute of the New Jersey Medical School (NJMS). Posting Summary Under the direction of the Principal Investigator and Research Operations Assistant Director, the Research Teaching Specialist III conducts research activities in diagnostic microbiology within a specialized biosafety level three (BSL3) containment laboratory. Duties include assisting the Principal Investigator with budgetary, laboratory maintenance, training, and administrative responsibilities. Responsibilities Culture and quantify pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria and viruses, including M. tuberculosis and SARS-CoV-2, maintaining BSL3 protocols. Perform detailed minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) testing and DNA/RNA extraction of bacteria using various systems, with preliminary analysis. Assist in the development and testing of new assays to detect bacteria and viruses from various body sites and clinical matrices. Assist in writing Institutional Review Board (IRB) and Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) submissions. Assist in obtaining informed consent and collecting and processing non-invasive samples from study participants according to experimental protocols. Qualifications Minimum Education and Experience: Master’s Degree in a relevant science plus one (1) year of related research experience, or a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant science plus two (2) years of related research experience. Experience in microbiological and biololecular techniques with BSL2 and BSL3 bacterial pathogens. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Complete a security risk assessment by the U.S. Department of Justice, enrollment in the personnel reliability program, and approval for access to select biological agents and toxins by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)/Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). Preferred Qualifications Experience working with virulent M. tuberculosis. Physical Demands and Work Environment Standing, sitting, walking, talking, and hearing; sitting at computer for extended periods; lifting low-weight items (approx. 3–5 lbs., up to 25 lbs.).
