Aircraft Inspector

Job Description AMA seeks a motivated and talented Aircraft Inspector to support NASA’s science, experiential, and support aircraft projects. The role requires in-depth knowledge of Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs), aircraft technical manuals, and organizational procedures to ensure quality aircraft maintenance. The inspector will conduct inspections and maintenance actions in accordance with directives, technical manuals, and regulations for aircraft, engines, or appliances. This is a temporary, on‑call position ending 31 Dec 2026, with work at an off‑site location and a home base at NASA Armstrong in Edwards AFB, California. Salary range: $124,800 – $135,200 per year. Responsibilities Inspect and verify aircraft and subsystem work per NASA, Air Force, Navy, FAA, and commercial requirements. Achieve Inspection Authority within one week if not already certified. Perform inspections on aircraft assigned to any project, platform, or shop. Conduct audits and surveillances of aircraft processes. Use Microsoft Office Suite to generate written reports documenting audit results, nonconformities, improvement opportunities, and best practices. Analyze and administer root‑cause, containment, and corrective action plans. Record all inspections in the NASA aircraft maintenance management system and relevant quality records. Witness operational tests and checks on equipment per approved technical data. Evaluate test/inspection results against acceptance criteria and record measurement data. Provide weekly inspection/surveillance reports to the Quality Assurance Branch Chief and on‑the‑spot reports as necessary. Review records for accuracy. Interface with project management and engineers. Assess maintenance activities and configuration documentation to confirm continued airworthiness. Accept and perform inspections of quality procedures, processes, and change requests. Conduct special or one‑time inspections per the Aircraft Maintenance Program and local policies. Verify test environment, configurations, and pass/fail criteria. Analyze technical adequacy of verification methods and criteria. Prefer knowledge of machine and sheet‑metal shop fabrication and repair. Requirements Minimum 20 years of technical experience; OR associate degree and 18 years; OR 16 years with a BS in a non‑engineering discipline. At least 10 of those years in engineering technician duties directly relevant to assigned tasks. Training & Certifications Preferred: FAA Airframe and Powerplant licensed technician. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required Strong aviation understanding of FARs, Air Force, Navy, NASA, and commercial requirements. Extensive knowledge of aircraft systems and maintenance practices. Experience in all levels of aircraft servicing, repair, and overhaul. Experience with configuration control of aircraft technical publications. Multi‑task oriented, capable of prioritizing, and able to manage maintenance schedules for inspections. Understanding of mechanical and electrical drawings and schematics. Follow AMA’s Corporate Health & Safety Plan and all related rules. Appropriate grooming and dress; must not impose a safety risk. Position is subject to drug testing. Must obtain and maintain an AFRC inspection stamp. Must obtain and maintain security clearance. Physical Requirements Work at a computer or desk; may involve long periods of sitting or standing. Typical indoor conditions; heat may be a factor. Equipment and Machines Standard office equipment, machines, and computer workstation. Working with magnification devices daily as required for inspection of small parts. Attendance Must be able to work at a remote location per the scheduled work set. Punctuality and regular attendance are essential. May require working weekends or non‑standard shifts; flexibility is required based on workload. Travel Travel required >75 % of the time.
