Summary The Nursing Tutor supports student learning and academic success within the Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) and Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) programs at Shawnee Community College. This role involves providing individualized and group tutoring sessions, assisting with the review of classroom and laboratory materials, and reinforcing course concepts to enhance student understanding and performance. Essential Duties or Responsibilities The essential duties and primary responsibilities below are intended to describe the general requirements of this job and are not intended to be an exhaustive statement of duties. Other related duties which may be required by the Director of Nursing (duties that may not be specifically listed in the class specification or position description, but are generally within the occupational series and responsibility level associated with the employee's class of work). Student Support and Tutoring Services Schedule tutoring sessions for all ADN and LPN nursing students individually. Group sessions can be scheduled if several students need assistance in one particular area. Utilize online and textbook resources available to students. Review exam concepts with students after the faculty has worked with the student to identify patterns of improper studying, test-taking, or understanding. Prepare students to successfully complete the NCLEX. Assist students in developing focus reviews based on proctored exam results. Workshops and Instructional Support Research and recommend study skills as part of orientation and workshops at the beginning of each semester. Prepare and facilitate workshops to teach test-taking skills. Assessment, Testing, and Academic Support Proctor online and classroom exams as needed. Assign tutorials on the computer when students are having difficulty in a particular area. Monitor student performance and assist in the appropriate skills performance in the nursing lab. Technical and Systems Support Troubleshoot student access and problems with online products and resources. Simulation and Lab Operations Coordinate and assist with clinical simulation and clinical make-up as needed. Maintenance of clinical simulation and laboratory equipment. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications - Education and Experience Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required Licensed Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois Proficient with Computers/ Technology Preferred: Two years of Nursing experience Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, both written and verbal. Strong understanding of nursing concepts, clinical procedures, and NCLEX preparation strategies. Proficient in tutoring and academic coaching techniques in both one-on-one and group settings. Ability to explain complex clinical concepts in an accessible, student-friendly manner. Skilled in using educational technologies, including online learning platforms and simulation tools. Strong organizational and time management abilities to coordinate multiple instructional activities. Ability to identify and respond to individual learning needs and promote academic success. Retirement State Universities Retirement System (SURS) 8% pretax 1.45% Medicare Tax .95% SURS Retirees Group Health Insurance Health Insurance Blue Cross Blue Shield - 80% of the individual premium is paid by the College. Employees can add family coverage at their own cost. The effective date of insurance coverage for an employee is the first day of the month following 30 days of eligible employment. (Example: if an employee starts work February 15, his/her coverage would begin April 1. Payroll deductions for the insurance would begin March 15 and 31 as the premium is due and payable on April 1) Dental Insurance Delta Dental - available for minimal cost per pay period for Employee and family Vision Insurance VSP - available for minimal cost per pay period for Employee and family Life Insurance The College pays the premium for a $15,000 life insurance policy on all full-time employees. Payroll Paid twice a month (15th and last working day). The college encourages the use of direct deposit. Tuition Waiver ? With written approval of the College President, the tuition and fees for SCC courses shall be waived for full-time employees, their spouses, and their dependent children under the age of 24 living in the household of the eligible employee. The books are loaned out at no charge through the SCC Bookstore. Staff Paid Leave Faculty Paid Leave Sick Days - 18 days per fiscal year (pro-rated based on hire date) Sick Days - 16 days per fiscal year Funeral Leave - 2 days per fiscal year Funeral Leave - 2 days for Funeral Leave (1 of the two days can be used for outside the immediate family) Personal Leave - 3 days per fiscal year Personal Leave - 4 days per fiscal year Vacation Days - 12 days for the first year. For each continued employment, 1 additional day is added per year up to a maximum of 20 days.
