Special Education Paraprofessional - ASD

Position Available: Special Education Paraprofessional - ASD / staggered hours between 7:00 AM - 3:45 PM

Rate of pay per 26M TSSSA (2024-2027) Contract: $18.13 per hour

Minimum Requirements:

• Must possess a High School Diploma or GED
• Qualify through the Personnel Office
• Speak fluent English
• Must be able to travel to all of the District's buildings as needed

Qualifications: *NCLB Requirements for a paraprofessional:

• Must possess a High School Diploma or GED
• Complete two years of study at an institution of higher education; or
• Obtain an Associate's (or higher) Degree; or
• Meet rigorous standards of quality and be able to demonstrate through a formal state or local academic assessment, knowledge of, and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics.
• Physically able to lift at least 50 lbs.
• Physically able to help with diapers/toileting.
• Physically able to run after active students.
• Note: The academic assessment described above would be fulfilled by taking the currently approved Test (Basic Skills Test of the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification) or the paraprofessional ETS Test developed by Michigan Department of Education.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Work under the general supervision and direction of the ASD teacher. The paraprofessional will also work under the supervision of the ASD coordinator, social worker, speech therapist, and occupational therapist when assisting students with classroom activities, toileting, feeding, dressing, and health needs.
• Assist staff; maintain and apply universal precautions and infection control procedures in the general management of the educational environment and equipment.
• Must possess working knowledge of CPI (Crisis Prevention/Intervention) and participate in district in-service updates as provided.
• Assist with toileting and diapering when needed.
• Assist in feeding as needed and adhere to flexible feeding schedules.
• Must be able to assist student with daily hygiene needs.
• Assist with medications taken by students.
• Maintain health data charts as needed. (e.g., medication, seizure, and toileting data).
• Assist students to and from buses using bus safety.
• Assist the students in individualized therapy programs supportive of academic and pre-vocational needs as directed by occupational therapist, social worker, ASD coordinator, and speech therapists.
• Assist and supervise students during lunch or recess as needed.
• Assist student(s) to and from school areas and remain with student(s) based on student needs. This includes but is not limited to: o All classes (special and general ed.) o Cafeteria o Library o PAES class (Career Center) o PE class (may include swimming) o Music Class
• Maintain flexible working hours to assist in loading and unloading ASD buses.
• Academic tutoring of ASD students in small groups or on a one-to-one basis under the supervision of the teacher.
• Assist students in mainstreamed situations (taking notes, setting up of materials, behavior redirection, etc.)
• Assist ASD students with the use of equipment such as calculators, computers, high and low-tech communication devices, AAC devices etc.
• Assist with clerical duties as it pertains to job title and set-ups in the classroom.
• All ASD paraprofessionals are assigned to the ASD program and in a situation of need may be temporarily reassigned to other classrooms to provide assistance to ASD students.
• Complete requested communicator forms on a timely basis.
• Complete necessary paperwork within timeframe given. Follow due date schedule given at the beginning of school year.
• Create substitute folder and keep updated.
• Reteach or redirect when necessary.
• Complete Medicaid form every month upon due date. Complete "Random Moment" time studies within given timelines.
• Assist with disruptive behavior within class and school environment.
• Understand the basis of behavior modification/assist with behavior and crisis intervention program designed by teacher and social worker.
• Perform all other job-related duties.
