Wastewater Treatment Design Engineer

What You Will Do: Wastewater Treatment Design Engineer at GFT will lead and support the design, optimization, and management of systems that treat and transport wastewater to ensure safety, efficiency, and environmental compliance. The role follows a hybrid work model with office attendance at one of our many locations. Key Responsibilities: Design wastewater treatment plants, pumping stations, and collection networks, including detailed CAD drawings and equipment selection. Develop new treatment systems or upgrade existing ones, incorporating biological nutrient removal, sludge handling, and filtration processes. Analyze and enhance treatment techniques (pH adjustment, chemical dosing, aeration) to improve efficiency and reduce costs. Perform hydraulic analysis of existing and new wastewater treatment plants, pump stations, and piping systems, selecting pumps and evaluating pump performance. Analyze lab data, operator reports, and chemical usage to resolve operational issues and improve efficiency. Ensure treated wastewater meets municipal or industrial regulatory standards to protect public health and the environment. Conduct feasibility studies, upgrade existing infrastructure, and manage projects from design to completion; develop cost projections and supervise construction or commissioning of new technology. Monitor operator reports and lab results to refine treatment techniques. Act as a technical specialist in conventional and advanced wastewater treatment processes, including physical/chemical primary treatment, activated sludge, biological nutrient removal, fixed‑film processes, membrane bio‑reactors, side‑stream treatment, tertiary filtration, auxiliary wet‑weather treatment, and disinfection. Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Environmental, or Chemical Engineering (Master’s preferred). Professional Engineer (PE) license required or ability to obtain within 6–12 months. At least 8 years of experience as a wastewater engineer designing studies, plans, and specifications for water and/or wastewater infrastructure. Expert knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures. EPC project experience preferred, including design and construction of wastewater treatment facilities and leadership of process design with full responsibility for budget, schedule, contractual obligations, client service, and quality standards. Demonstrated experience in preliminary treatment, primary treatment, biological treatment (including BNR), disinfection, hydraulics, and solids processing and handling. Compensation: The salary range for this role is $90,000 - $200,000, depending on experience and geographic location. Benefits: Hybrid (in‑person and remote) work environment.
