Assistant Director, Residency Program - Department of Emergency Medicine

The Assistant Director, Residency Program will join our close-knit team providing leadership and oversight for the operational, financial, accreditation, educational, and administrative activities of the emergency medicine residency program. This is an opportunity to play a crucial role in facilitating a complex, rigorous program to train new physicians to practice emergency medicine.
The Assistant Director serves as the senior administrative leader for the emergency medicine residency program. They will oversee a team of Program Coordinators and will partner with the Program Director, Assistant/Associate Program Directors, System Education Program Administrator, Department Leadership, and institutional stakeholders to ensure regulatory compliance, operational excellence, effective resource utilization, and achievement of strategic objectives. The Assistant Director develops departmental GME operational strategy, leads administrative teams, and establishes standards supporting the educational mission.
The position involves responsibilities which are cyclical over the year in their intensity. As such, team members are expected to exhibit flexibility to support each other as needs change over time. We also value suggestions and innovations for making our large, complex system more efficient, organized, and effective in supporting and communicating with trainees. As all of the programs train dedicated young physicians at critical developmental stages in their careers and lives, a desire to build supportive connections with them is also appreciated.
Responsibilities
Program Management
- Directs operational, accreditation, educational, and administrative activities for the emergency medicine residency program.
- Serves as the senior departmental administrative resource regarding the emergency medicine residency operations, accreditation, compliance, and program administration.
- Develops operational goals, performance measures, and strategic initiatives supporting program effectiveness and educational excellence.
- Develops and manages educational budgets, staffing plans, resource allocation strategies, and operational improvement initiatives supporting program goals.
- Evaluates operational, educational, accreditation, and financial outcomes and develops recommendations to improve program effectiveness and efficiency.
- Serves as the primary administrative liaison between Program Directors, Department Leadership, institutional committees, and Graduate Medical Education leadership and represents the department on institutional initiatives and workgroups.
Program Compliance with ACGME Accreditation and Other External Agencies
- Compiles, updates, and submits reports to ACGME, EUFAC, and other external agencies and professional organizations.
- Provides oversight of accreditation activities including Annual Program Evaluation (APE), Program Evaluation Committee (PEC), Clinical Competency Committee (CCC), WebADS reporting, Program Letters of Agreement (PLA), accreditation readiness, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
- Utilizes RMS data, analytics, resident complement information, participating site reporting, and operational metrics to support accreditation readiness, workforce planning, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) cost reporting, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Collaborates with Program Directors and faculty leadership to support accreditation compliance, action plan implementation, reporting activities, and program improvement efforts.
- Oversees educational administration activities including curriculum management, evaluation systems, milestone reporting, scholarly activity tracking, educational outcomes assessment, and Residency Management System utilization.
- Supports the development of the residency program’s academic and clinical requirements to ensure accreditation standards are maintained.
- Oversees maintenance of records related to all of the above.
Resident Recruitment and Onboarding
- Oversees trainee lifecycle management activities including recruitment, onboarding, credentialing, licensure, immigration support, compliance, and graduation processes.
- Oversees the development and planning of all aspects of the resident interview process including managing Rescas, scheduling interview dates, corresponding with potential applicants, confirming meetings and appointments and ensuring applicant credentials are in compliance with current guidelines.
- Provides departmental oversight for NRMP, onboarding, recruitment operations, and related graduate medical education technologies.
Credentialing, Appointments, Reappointments
- Oversees processes for the house staff onboarding credentialing and reappointment credentialing.
- Collaborates with program coordinators, GME Office, and other staff members to support compliance.
Staff Management
Provides direct supervision, mentoring, coaching, and performance management for the residency program coordinators and administrative staff.
Leads workforce planning, employee engagement, succession planning, staff development, and implementation of departmental best practices related to residency administration.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree in Healthcare Administration, Public Administration, Business Administration, Public Health, Higher Education Administration, or related field preferred.
Experience Requirements
- Five (5) or more years of progressively responsible experience in graduate medical education administration, healthcare administration, academic administration, or related field. Significant leadership experience preferred.
Licensing and Certification Requirements (if applicable)
- TAGME (Training Administrators of Graduate Medical Education) certification preferred.
Computer Skills
Advanced proficiency with MS Office Suite and graduate medical education technologies including Residency Management Systems (New Innovations), Thalamus, ERAS, Rescas, WebADS, reporting tools, analytics platforms, and related educational technologies

Compensation Statement
The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides salary ranges that comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $78,884.00 - $118,326.00 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and operational need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
