Pathology Assistant

Anatomic Pathology SupervisorManage all daily surgical pathology and cytology functions, including grossing of specimens, autopsies and ensuring completion of embedding, microtomy and staining.Directly supervise the Anatomic Pathology division, Laboratory Department and all activities related to Necropsy service.Educate and train interns, residents, medical students, new employees, including histotechnicians, cytotechnologists, and pathologists in both formal lecture and informal bench-side settings.Develop or participates in the development of Anatomic Pathology protocols.Investigate and resolve problems related to all surgical pathology specimens.Responsible for all elements of gross examination and sectioning for all types of surgical pathology specimens.Manage collection and interpretation of data for Anatomic Pathology quality Assurance and Performance Improvement programs.Perform dissections under the supervision of attending pathologists, order special studies, prepare provisional autopsy diagnoses and final autopsy reports.Coordinate procurement of supplies, equipment, instrumentation, and other necessary resources and assures compliance with budgetary limitations.Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.One-year supervisory probationary period required. A one-year probationary period is required if the selectee has not previously met this requirement.This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.This position may require the incumbent to work during irregular work hours which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or varying work schedules.Applicants must be able to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.This position requires a physical and lifting up to 45 pounds.Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.This position has mandatory seasonal Influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal Influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).This position requires the incumbent to have Tuberculosis testing.This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.Pathologist Assistant certification certified by the American Society for Clinical Pathology preferred, but not required.Who May Apply: US CitizensIn order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Additional information about transcripts is available.Basic Requirement for Supervisory Pathology Assistant: Degree: Bachelor's or graduate (or higher level) degree with major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed:Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes managing or facilitating daily surgical pathology and cytology functions within the Anatomic Pathology Division which include grossing of specimens, autopsies and ensuring completion of embedding, microtomy and staining and applies the theories and practices of anatomic pathology as it applies to surgical pathology (histology), cytology, and autopsy services as evidenced and anatomy and skill to recognize pathologic abnormalities in a wide variety of gross specimens. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).Education Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
