Coeur Alaska’s Kensington mine comprises an underground, hard-rock gold mine, associated milling facilities and a campsite in the historic Berners Bay Mining District, 45 miles north-northwest of Juneau. About the Job:

Coeur Alaska’s Mobile Mechanic Trainee Program is a collaboration with the University of Alaska Southeast’s (UAS) Associates of Applied Sciences (AAS) Power Technology Program. This degree program is a vocational training program for students interested in working with various diesel engine applications.

The Mobile Mechanic Trainee will attend the program and have their tuition costs covered by Coeur Alaska, receive a monthly cost-of-living stipend while attending school, and gain valuable, paid, on-the-job training outside of the classroom. Coeur Alaska will provide basic tools needed while in the program. The successful candidate must maintain a 2.8 grade point average, demonstrate satisfactory attendance, and remain in good standing with Coeur and UAS to continue eligibility in the program.

Responsibilities:

• Attend class and remain attentive, engaged, ask questions, and demonstrate good behavior.
• After successful completion of the UAS AAS Diesel Technology Program, the employee will be expected to work for a minimum of 2 additional years or may be subject to paying back the tuition fees.
• Employees must comply with all company policies including, but not limited to: attendance, safety, environmental, and HR policies. Employees are responsible for understanding and complying with the Environment, Health, Safety and Social Responsibility Policies. Employees must protect the environment and their own safety, as well as those around them.
• Satisfactory performance, attendance, and adherence to safety procedures during on-the-job training.
• Areas/duties that the employee will learn while working onsite:
  • Job shadowing on surface and underground, 11-12 hour days.
  • Pre-shift inspection of work areas and equipment.
  • Maintenance and repair surface and /or underground mobile mining equipment such as Drills, Bolters, Loaders, Haul Trucks and Heavy and Light duty support equipment.
  • Diesel and gas engine trouble shooting and repair.
  • Diagnose and repair of mechanical, hydraulic and electrical components of mobile mining equipment.

Required Qualifications & Skills:

• Completion of one of the following UAS programs:
  • Mining Pathways Program
  • Intro to Mining Science Occupational Endorsement
  • 1 year of the UAS AAS Diesel Technology Program
• Maintain a 2.8 grade point average, demonstrate satisfactory attendance, and remain in good standing with Coeur Alaska and UAS.
• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Ability to work safely and promote safe behavior in others.
• Positive attitude, strong work ethic, and a team-oriented mindset – being respectful, reliable, and easy to work with is just as important as technical skills.
• Follow all company policies and procedures.
• Strong analytical, technical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
• Employees may be frequently exposed to underground work environments; outside weather conditions, wet and/or humid conditions; extreme cold, extreme heat, potentially hazardous wildlife; moving mechanical parts; high precarious places; fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock; explosives and vibration. The noise level in most work environments is usually very loud. This position may require work on nights, weekends and rotating shifts; shift schedules require residency in camp during work rotations.

Physical Demands:

This position requires the ability to safely perform work in both schooling and mining environments, including, but not limited to:

• Working outdoors in a range of environmental conditions, including rain, snow, ice, wind, cold temperatures, and periods of limited daylight.
• Working underground in enclosed mining environments with limited natural light and extended periods without exposure to daylight.
• Frequent standing and walking on uneven surfaces on both the surface and underground.
• Climbing stairs, ladders, and escapeways.
• Lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally; pushing and pulling equipment or materials up to 50 pounds; bending, kneeling, crouching, and reaching.
• Employees must be able to wear required PPE, including respiratory protection when applicable, work in varying environmental conditions, and participate in emergency response and evacuation procedures.

Mine Site Information:

The Kensington Mine is located within the historic Berners Bay Mining District, a region with deep mining roots that date back over a century. The mine site is a remote camp located approximately 45 miles outside of Juneau, Alaska. Transportation to and from the mine site happens twice per day (once in the morning and once in the afternoon) and takes approximately 1.5 hours each way. To get to the mine site, employees board a bus in Juneau that transports to the Yankee Cove dock (~30 minutes), then board a boat (~45 minutes), then board another bus to the camp area (~15 minutes). Food and housing is provided on-site to employees. Rooms are dormitory style with two twin beds, a TV, and storage for your personal belongings.
