Staff Psychologist Veteran Mental Health Leader (EDRP Eligible)

Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after a complete review of the EDRP application, with an award amount of up to $200,000 and an eligibility period of one to five years. Qualifications United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy. Education: Have a doctoral degree in psychology from a graduate program accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) – the Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System (PCSAS) – or the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) at the time of completion. Have a doctoral degree in another area of psychology and successfully complete a re‑specialization program (including an approved internship) in an APA or CPA accredited doctoral program. Have a doctoral degree awarded between 1951 and 1978 from a regionally accredited institution with a dissertation primarily psychological in nature. Internships: Successfully completed a professional psychology internship program accredited by APA or CPA at the time of completion and consistent with the assignment. New VHA psychology internship programs in the process of APA accreditation are acceptable if sanctioned by the VHA Central Office Program Director for Psychology and the VHA Office of Academic Affiliations at the time of internship. Pre‑doctoral internships prior to PL 96‑151 are considered acceptable if sanctioned by the VHA. Interns not accredited may be considered eligible if board certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology in a consistent specialty; the certification must be current and meet continuing education requirements. Equivalent of a one‑year supervised internship acceptable if documented. Licensure: Hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a U.S. state, territory, or commonwealth, or District of Columbia. Non‑licensed applicants may be given a temporary appointment as a "graduate psychologist" at GS‑11 or GS‑12 for up to two years under supervision. Board Certification: For applicants whose internship was not accredited, board certification by the American Board of Professional Psychology in a consistent specialty is required; the certificate must be current and the applicant must meet continuing education requirements. English Language Proficiency: Proficient in spoken and written English per VA Handbook 5005; may qualify under the Grandfathering Provision for current VHA employees. Grade Determinations: Experience requirements per grade: GS‑11: None beyond basic requirements. GS‑12: At least one year of experience as a professional psychologist equivalent to GS‑11. GS‑13: At least two years of experience, with at least one year equivalent to GS‑12. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: For each grade, candidates must demonstrate knowledge and ability to apply professional psychological treatments, design and implement effective strategies, incorporate new clinical procedures, conduct research activities, collaborate with research teams, provide professional advice and consultation, and knowledge of clinical research literature. Duties VA Careers – Psychologist: Provides comprehensive mental health services at VA Ann Arbor Hospital (Level 1B high‑complexity facility) and serves over 60,000 veterans annually across multiple outpatient and inpatient settings. Clinical Responsibilities: Evaluate and diagnose mental disorders; treat mental health, substance use, behavioral concerns; complete clinical charting and documentation; consult with and serve as a resource for other professional personnel; collaborate as part of an interprofessional team. Teaching Responsibilities: Provides didactic lectures, workshops, seminars, and consultation across training programs, including undergraduate to post‑doctoral studies, psychiatry residents, fellows, medical students, social work and nurse practitioner trainees. Research: May conduct research and present findings at VA and national conferences; may participate in manuscript preparation; assist trainees with research projects relevant to veteran care. Administrative Responsibilities: Serve on Mental Health Service, Healthcare System, VISN, or National VA committees; lead VA and partner affiliate programs; represent the Healthcare System at professional and community events. Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Recruitment Incentive: Not authorized. Permanent Change of Station (Relocation Assistance): Not authorized; EDRP authorized. Pay: Competitive salary with regular increases; higher step rate may be considered for unique qualifications. Paid Time Off: 37–50 days of annual PTO (13–26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 federal holidays); credit toward annual leave accrual based on prior work experience. Parental Leave: Up to 12 weeks paid after 12 months employment. Child Care Subsidy: Full‑time employees with family income below $144,000 may receive a subsidy of up to 25% of eligible childcare costs, up to $416.66 per month. Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5‑year vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5% VA contribution. Health, vision, dental, term life, and long‑term care insurance available.
