Substitute Custodian

Performs manual work keeping the school building and school offices in clean and orderly condition and tends furnace, air conditioner, and boiler to provide heat, cool air, and hot water for employees or students by performing the following duties.

Sweeps, mops, scrubs, wax, dust and vacuums assigned area(s).

Scrubs and disinfects toilet doors daily and cleans drinking fountains, urinals, toilet bows, and other fixtures daily using such materials as will keep them in a clean and sanitary condition.

Wash windows on both the inside and outside at least twice each year.

To be on duty when events are scheduled outside of the regular school hours (if requested).

Empties trash and garbage containers.

Maintains building, performing minor and routine painting and other related maintenance activities.

Replaces air conditioner filters.

Notifies school officials concerning need for major repairs or additions to lighting, heating, and ventilating equipment.

Cleans snow and debris from sidewalk.

Mows lawn, trims shrubbery, and cultivates flowers.

To perform other duties as assigned by the head custodian.

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one situations.

Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Heavy physical labor. Climbing ladders. Standing for extended periods of time. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate various custodial equipment and tools. Lifting heavy objects. Pushing or pulling. Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally. Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; toxic or caustic chemicals; and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of classified personnel.
