This role requires a registered professional nurse who assumes responsibility for a group of patients for a designated shift. Nursing care will be prescribed based on the nursing process and is aligned with the medical plan of care. Patient input and that of significant others will inform care decisions. Collaboration with physicians and other health care team members is essential for coordinated patient care across all age groups. This includes neonatal, infant, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. Teaching and discharge planning needs must be incorporated into the overall plan of care. Delegation of certain aspects of patient care delivery to other nursing staff will be based on their current clinical competence and legal scope of practice. This position is represented by a nursing association. Essential functions include utilizing the nursing process to assess patients, design and implement individualized plans of care, and evaluate the effectiveness of these plans. Consideration of age-specific, cultural, and spiritual needs of patients is crucial. Collaboration with other disciplines to formulate care plans for assigned patients is necessary. Knowledge of illnesses, injuries, diseases, and developmental stages must inform the delivery of patient care. Pharmacological knowledge is essential when preparing and administering medications and IV therapy. Patient and family education must be provided in all phases of care to promote compliance and cooperation. Assessing knowledge and planning appropriate learning activities while seeking feedback is vital for effective education. The nurse must respond to emergency situations or internal/external disasters according to established protocols. Overseeing patient care delivery and correcting errors is necessary for patient safety. Timely reporting of observations and problems regarding patients to appropriate personnel is required. Demonstrating responsibility for problem-solving and clinical decision-making on the assigned shift is expected. Continuity of care must be ensured by promptly processing and following through on physician's orders. Setting appropriate priorities in providing patient care and responding to changes in workload are essential skills. Acting as a patient advocate ensures rights are preserved. Knowledge of job descriptions allows for appropriate delegation to unlicensed assistive personnel based on their clinical competence. Acceptance of responsibility for own actions and decisions is required. Practicing registered nursing according to the Nurse Practice Act is essential. Maintaining awareness of professional responsibilities and legal scope of practice is expected. Effective communication with patients, families, staff, physicians, and coworkers is crucial. Accurate documentation of assessments, nursing interventions, and care provided is mandatory. Using established policies and procedures, the nurse performs technical aspects of patient care with accuracy and attention to detail. Preparation and administration of medications and IVs must consider age-specific needs. Emergency procedures, such as CPR, must be performed as needed, and the patient's response must be assessed. Safe use of equipment, including various patient care devices, is required. Other job-related duties may be assigned as necessary.
