Job Description

This position is responsible for operating an excavator on large-scale ash basin closure projects, supporting high-volume excavation and material handling activities. You will work in heavy production environments such as environmental remediation, heavy civil construction, mining, landfill, dredging, and ash pond closure projects, ensuring safe, efficient, and precise earthmoving operations.

Responsibilities

• Operate excavators to excavate, load, and move coal ash, soil, rock, and other materials while consistently maintaining production targets.
• Load off-road haul trucks with ash and other materials for transport and disposal throughout the project site.
• Perform heavy production excavation in large-scale earthmoving operations, including ash basin closures and environmental remediation projects.
• Work safely and efficiently in active construction environments with multiple pieces of heavy equipment and active haul routes.
• Conduct excavation in wet or unstable ground conditions while maintaining equipment stability and operational safety.
• Perform grade control and precision excavation to meet project specifications and quality standards, including fine grading work.
• Carry out routine equipment inspections and basic preventative maintenance to ensure reliable and safe equipment performance.
• Follow site safety procedures and environmental compliance standards at active power plant locations and other project sites.
• Collaborate with site teams, including haul truck drivers and other heavy equipment operators, to coordinate material movement and production flow.
• Adapt to production-driven work environments with high volumes of dirt moving and continuous excavation activities.

Essential Skills

• Proven experience operating excavators in heavy production settings.
• Demonstrated ability to work safely around active haul routes and multiple pieces of construction and heavy equipment.
• Hands-on experience with heavy production excavation and mass earthmoving operations.
• Experience loading off-road haul trucks with ash, soil, rock, and other materials.
• Background in ash basin closure, ash pond closure, or coal ash handling and material movement.
• Experience in environmental remediation projects, heavy civil construction, landfills, mining operations, or dredging projects.
• Ability to perform grade control and precision excavation, including fine grading.
• Competence in excavation in wet or unstable ground conditions while maintaining safe operations.
• Knowledge of safe operation practices around heavy equipment in active construction environments.
• Experience working in production-driven work environments focused on dirt moving and earthworks.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience operating dozers, track hoes, and long reach excavators in earthworks and construction settings.
• Background in heavy equipment operations across civil construction and earthworks projects.
• Familiarity with ash basin closure projects at active power plants.
• Experience with equipment inspections and basic preventative maintenance tasks.
• Exposure to landfill, mining, or dredging environments and large-scale earthmoving projects.
• Ability to maintain safety, quality, and environmental compliance standards in high-production work environments.

Work Environment

This role is based on ash basin closure projects at active power plants and other large-scale earthmoving sites. You will work in a high-production excavation environment, primarily operating an excavator to load off-road haul trucks with coal ash and other materials for transport throughout the site. The setting involves active construction operations with multiple pieces of heavy equipment, continuous material movement, and production-driven schedules. You must be comfortable working extended hours, often 60 to 70 hours per week, in outdoor conditions that may include wet or unstable ground. The environment emphasizes strict adherence to safety, quality, and environmental compliance standards while performing heavy civil and earthworks activities.

This is a Contract position based out of Roxboro, NC.

The pay range for this position is $27.00 - $30.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
