BASIC FUNCTION Under the direction and supervision of the Preschool Site Supervisor, the Preschool Teacher provides a safe, nurturing environment and engaging activities to support preschool-aged children's developmental and social-emotional needs. The Preschool Teacher provides education, care, and supervision in classrooms and playgrounds. This position employs a range of instructional techniques and strategies to enhance student progress by establishing and maintaining a productive classroom environment. The Preschool Teacher assists in the development and implementation of the program curriculum.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Utilize a variety of teaching methodologies and strategies and activities such as singing, dance, rhythm, and arts and crafts to instruct a wide range of students based on their developmental, physical, and emotional maturity
• Prepare appropriate educational development plans for students
• Utilize informal and formal assessments and exercises to evaluate student skill levels
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe environment by performing housekeeping tasks, checking equipment and grounds for safety, and reporting any concerns or faulty equipment that do not meet safety standards
• Plan and implement a variety of physical activities to develop student gross and fine motor skills
• Provide routine first aid, contact Preschool Site Supervisor, families, police, fire, and emergency medical services as required
• Guide children with self-care, hygiene, and toileting needs, which includes diapering children
• May assist, prepare, and distribute snacks or meals
• May administer pre-authorized medication under specific guidelines and direction
• Complete and maintain a variety of records and files, including confidential student records and medical information
• Plan, design, and provide meaningful learning and developmental activities for preschool classes, including a program of instruction designed to enhance developmental, emotional, and physical capabilities of students
• Plan, coordinate, and maintain a supportive learning environment independently by working collaboratively with co-workers to develop lessons and learning activities
• Deliver education by using effective oral communication skills and provide students with clearly communicated instructions
• Create a positive, supportive, and inclusive preschool classroom that promotes teamwork and collaboration among staff, students, and families
• Participate in professional development opportunities offered by department, school site, and District that are held during employee's work hours and work year
• May participate in professional development opportunities outside employee's work hours and work year
• Perform related duties as assigned

Typical Qualifications

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENT Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and skills may be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and skills would be: Experience : One year of paid or volunteer experience in a licensed children's center, preschool-aged enrichment program, or comparable child care program Education :

• Equivalent to the completion of High School and 12-semester units (or equivalent quarter units) in early childhood education or child development, including at least one three-semester unit (or four-quarter unit) course in each of the following core areas:
  1. Child growth and development or human growth and development
  2. Child, family, and community or child and family
  3. Program/curriculum

LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENT

• Possess and maintain current First Aid Certification
• Possess and maintain current CPR Certification

Supplemental Information

PHYSICAL DEMANDS : Persons performing service in this position classification will be expected to perform medium work, which involves lifting no more than 50 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds. If someone can do medium work, we determine that he or she can also do sedentary and light work. (Per the Code of Federal Regulations – Section 404.1567 "Physical Exertion Requirements"). The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects of this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions.

• Engage in moderate physical activity, working in both indoor and outdoor environments throughout day
• Stand and walk for extended periods (greater than one hour) while supervising children and facilitating physical activities, including running/jogging, to ensure safety during play
• Bend down, squat, step, and/or kneel frequently
• Sit on floor and participate in classroom activities
• Ability to grasp, reach, push, and pull classroom and outdoor equipment, aids, and supplies
• Lift and carry program supplies and materials by bending, lifting, and transporting items
• Demonstrate sufficient arm, hand, and finger dexterity to operate tools, laptop/desktop computer, multimedia tools, and other program/office equipment
• Actively participate in playful playground activities with children
• Utilize sufficient hearing and speaking abilities to professionally project voice and communicate effectively with staff and students in both group and one-on-one settings
• Maintain visual acuity to read printed materials and computer screens, observe and monitor children and environment for safety

Certificate Renewal: For positions requiring a valid First Aid and/or CPR certification, candidates must maintain a current status through their date of hire. If the certification expires prior to the start of the assignment, the candidate is responsible for renewing it before their first day. Throughout employment, it is the employee's responsibility to maintain any required certification and ensure that it remains current and valid.

Fingerprinting: Employees will be charged for processing their fingerprints at the time they are hired. The fingerprints are used to complete a confidential background investigation. All candidates with a record of convictions must indicate such on the confidential data form, which is attached to the job application. A record of conviction will not automatically disqualify an applicant from employment, but failure to list all convictions may result in disqualification or dismissal.

Physical Examination: Newly hired employees must pass a qualifying Medical examination given by a District-appointed physician, which includes testing for illegal controlled substances.

Tuberculosis Exam: Newly hired employees must submit a Mantoux Skin screening and certificate of completion within the past 60 days that indicates freedom from active tuberculosis.

BENEFITS: Permanent employees will receive paid holidays, sick leave, vacation and longevity benefits per contract or Commission Rules. The District offers a comprehensive package of insurance benefits. Employees working less than full-time, but a minimum of four hours will contribute an amount proportionate to the number of assigned work hours for major medical insurance benefits. The District does not offer a package of insurance benefits to employees working less than four hours per day. The District provides life insurance for employees who work a minimum of 3 hours.
