The Woodlands Diagnostic Laboratory Center provides patient care for over 1,200 patients each week. Job Responsibilities Primary responsibility is blood collection using venipuncture and processing of body fluids/blood specimens for laboratory testing. Perform phlebotomy procedures competently, including venipuncture, blood culture, peripheral line, urine, blood bank collections, genetic test, research, and specimen processing. Complete Positive Patient Identification according to institutional guidelines before procedures. Read labels and instructions, accurately label specimens, and maintain specimen integrity. Complete most procedures within 10–20 minutes of the first venipuncture attempt. Share information regarding difficult venipunctures and outcomes with supervisors. Greet patients courteously, respond with empathy, and assist patients with needle fear. Adhere to standard operating procedures, maintain accurate records, and assist with teamwork and education requirements. Participate in safety training, maintain a clean work area, prevent needlesticks, and follow equipment stewardship. Maintain a professional work environment, manage attendance, productivity, and wait times, and communicate effectively with staff and leadership. Perform additional duties as assigned. Job Specific Competencies Execute phlebotomy procedures competently and independently. Demonstrate competency through direct observation and assessment. Adhere to policies, procedures, and protocols, including safety and quality standards. Complete continuing education and safety training requirements. Wear personal protective equipment and follow universal precautions. Undergo annual fit testing for respiratory protection. Required Experience Minimum of three months phlebotomy experience in a clinical laboratory. Completion of an MD Anderson phlebotomy internship. Preferred: Six months experience with preferred education; or three months with preferred education. Education and Certifications High School Diploma or equivalent (required). Associate’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or completion of a specialized phlebotomy training program (preferred). Preferred certifications: CPT – Phlebotomy Technician Certification (American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Registry or American Certification Agency) upon hire.
