Job Title: Lumber Yard Technician Job Description The Lumber Yard Technician works in both the outdoor yard and on-site fabrication shops to support daily operations by handling materials, operating forklifts, assembling skids, and preparing products for shipment. This role involves consistent use of hand and power tools, measuring and cutting materials to length, and safely loading and unloading trucks in a fast-paced, physically demanding environment. Responsibilities Load and unload trucks safely and efficiently using forklifts and other material handling methods. Operate forklifts to move lumber and materials throughout the yard and fabrication shops. Assemble skids and prepare materials for shipments according to specifications and instructions. Use hand and power tools to cut materials to length and assemble products accurately. Read and interpret basic blueprints or drawings to complete assembly and cutting tasks. Move, stack, and organize materials in the yard and shops to maintain an orderly work area. Perform heavy lifting and manual handling of lumber and related materials throughout the shift. Measure materials using a tape measure to ensure accurate cuts and proper assembly. Follow all safety procedures while operating equipment, tools, and working in the yard and shops. Work closely with the yard and shop teams to meet daily production and shipping schedules. Participate in a pre-start tour with the yard foreman to understand the full scope of the role and work environment. Maintain a clean and safe work area by following housekeeping and equipment care practices. Essential Skills Experience in construction or general labor, preferably with a experience in construction labor or building houses. Ability to assist carpenters or work in similar hands-on construction environments. Proficiency in operating a forklift or strong willingness and ability to learn, as forklift operation is critical for this role. Ability to perform heavy lifting and physically demanding tasks throughout an 8-hour shift. Experience using hand tools and power tools safely and effectively. Basic blueprint reading and interpretation skills for assembly and cutting tasks. Ability to use a tape measure accurately for measuring and cutting materials. Comfort working in varying temperatures, including hot summers and cold winters. Reliability and strong attendance to support consistent year-round operations. Additional Skills & Qualifications Previous experience in a lumber yard, fabrication shop, or similar industrial environment. Familiarity with assembling skids or preparing materials for shipment. Comfort working both indoors in fabrication shops and outdoors in a yard setting. Strong attention to detail when measuring, cutting, and assembling materials. Willingness to work second shift hours (3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.) and day shift (7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) if available. Commitment to working safely around forklifts, tools, and heavy materials. Work Environment You work both in an outdoor lumber yard and inside two fabrication shops, regularly moving between areas based on daily needs. The role involves frequent use of forklifts, hand tools, power tools, and tape measures in an active, production-focused setting. Conditions vary with the seasons, with hot temperatures in the summer and cold temperatures in the winter, so you should be comfortable working in changing weather. Shifts are typically 8 hours with a 30-minute lunch break, with second shift running from 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. and a day shift option of 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. when available. Before starting, you receive a guided tour of the yard and shops to understand expectations, safety practices, and the overall work environment. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Kansas City, KS. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr.
