Inside Machinist (Manual)

Location: San Diego, CA

Position Summary: The Inside Machinist is responsible for the setup and operation of a variety of manual and conventional machine tools, as well as specialized sheet metal fabrication equipment. This role focuses on the manual machining and fabrication of shipboard components, including shafts, bushings, valves, and custom ventilation or structural sheet metal units. The Inside Machinist must interpret complex blueprints and apply a deep technical knowledge of manual mechanics and metal properties to achieve precise fitment for US Navy and commercial maritime vessels.

Essential Functions:

• Sets up and operates manual lathes, milling machines, boring mills, drill presses, and grinders.
• Operates sheet metal machinery including manual shears, box and pan brakes, slip rolls, and punch presses to fabricate custom maritime components.
• Machines and fabricates high-tolerance parts from raw materials (steel, aluminum, brass, alloys) based on technical drawings.
• Performs precision measurements using manual micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, and framing squares to ensure parts meet exacting tolerances.
• Interprets Process Control Procedures (PCP) and Objective Quality Evidence (OQE) requirements for each job.
• Calculates dimensions, bend allowances, and tolerances using advanced shop math and manual instruments.
• Develops and writes Condition Found Reports (CFR) if a component or structural unit is found to be non-salvageable.
• Manually aligns and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, and sheet metal workpieces onto machines.

Qualifications:

• Experience: Six (6) years of machinist experience, with at least two (2) years in a maritime or heavy industrial manual shop environment encompassing both machining and sheet metal work.
• Technical Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of manual machine shop terminology, sheet metal layout, tool geometry, and metallurgy.
• Education: Proficiency in shop math, including geometry and trigonometry for calculating manual tapers, bend radiuses, and complex fitment.
• Blueprint Reading: Advanced ability to read and interpret complex mechanical drawings and structural sheet metal developments.
• Safety: Thorough understanding of shop safety, including Lock-out/Tag-out and sheet metal machine guarding (shears/brakes).

Physical Requirements: The physical demands described here are representative of those required for daily shop and fabrication operations.

• Lifting: Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 50 lbs frequently and 100 lbs occasionally (such as large metal sheets) with assistance.
• Stamina: Capability for prolonged standing at a manual machine or fabrication station (up to 8 hours).
• Dexterity: High degree of manual dexterity for delicate tool adjustments and the precise handling of sheet metal.
• Maneuvering: Ability to bend, stoop, and reach to secure large workpieces or feed material into shears and rollers.

Work Environment:

• Conditions: Primarily an indoor shop environment; however, exposure to industrial lubricants, metal shavings, and varying temperatures is expected.
• Noise: Shop environment is typically moderate to loud, requiring consistent use of hearing protection.
• Safety: Mandatory use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including safety glasses with side shields, steel-toe boots, and cut-resistant gloves when handling sheet metal.

Compliance: Must comply with company best safety practices, OSHA standards, and the "Non-Discrimination and Anti-Harassment Policy". Consistent attendance and the ability to work overtime or varying shifts to support urgent vessel repair schedules are required.
