Brooklyn Prospect Charter School is seeking a Part-time Education Specialist to support high-quality teaching and learning across our extended-day COMPASS programs. The Education Specialist plays a critical role in strengthening instructional practice, ensuring alignment between after-school learning experiences and school-day goals, and driving measurable academic growth. Working in partnership with the onsite Program Director and supporting Academy Coordinators at partner sites, the Education Specialist ensures programming reflects strong pedagogy, clear learning outcomes, and meaningful academic supports. A key priority is reducing learning loss and establishing systems to monitor improvement in student grades and test scores. The ideal candidate is a dynamic educator with strong instructional expertise, experience collaborating across teams, and a passion for supporting youth development in an after-school setting. This position reports to the After School Program Manager and works closely with school leaders and cross‑functional teams to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of our Middle School (Grades 6–8) COMPASS Afterschool Program. Program & Activity Planning Develop and implement a structured lesson planning process, including learning objectives, pacing, and activity design Review lesson plans for rigor, clarity, and alignment to measurable learning outcomes Conduct observations of academic and enrichment activities; provide actionable feedback Ensure all structured activities have clearly defined learning outcomes or measurable skill gains Strengthen existing lesson plans and support instructors in adapting curriculum to meet diverse student needs Establish systems for evaluating program activities and staff performance Identify best practices and areas in need of improvement to enhance program quality Provide coaching, professional development, and ongoing instructional support Recruitment, Training & Professional Development Support staffing decisions by identifying strong instructional candidates across the school/network Lead quarterly on‑site trainings focused on lesson planning, classroom management, and pedagogy Reinforce training through individualized coaching, modeling, and follow‑up School Partnership & Instructional Alignment Collaborate with the Program Director and school principal to establish a shared vision for COMPASS Facilitate alignment between after‑school academic supports and school‑day learning goals Maintain communication and collaborative planning between school staff and after‑school instructors Ensure instructional practices, curricula, and behavior expectations align with BPCS and DYCD requirements Establish systems for monitoring student progress, setting goals, and addressing individual participant needs Ensure the program is driven by student achievement and meaningful learning—not just logistics Break Academies & Summer Program Development Collaborate with the Network ASP Director and Network Director of T&L on mid‑winter break and summer academies Partner with school teams to gather academic data and inform summer program placement; co‑design academic and enrichment master schedules with the Program Manager Support teachers in creating rigorous, engaging curricula for break and summer academies Conduct observations, provide coaching, and serve as moderator when needed Monitor student progress and communicate updates with parents and school leadership Support family communication in collaboration with camp staff Additional DYCD‑Required Responsibilities In accordance with DYCD requirements, the Education Specialist—or another designated senior‑level staff member—will assume the following responsibilities (fulfilled by existing staff, not new positions): Data, Administrative & Fiscal Compliance Ensure data, administrative, and fiscal obligations of the COMPASS contract are met Oversee accurate collection and reporting of attendance, enrollment, and outcome measures Maintain compliance documentation and collaborate with the Program Director on audits and deliverables Mental Health Supports Oversight Oversee implementation of Mental Health Supports, ensuring youth‑facing staff follow required policies Integrate trauma‑informed practices and coordinate referrals for needed services Collaborate with schools and DYCD to ensure appropriate mental health supports are provided to students Inclusion Coordinator Functions Serve as the Inclusion Coordinator or support the designated Inclusion Coordinator Manage Individualized Accommodation Plans for students needing additional support Maintain Student Behavioral Support Plans and Logs Coordinate services for students with disabilities or English Language Learners through: Hiring paraprofessionals or staff with relevant language skills Facilitating referrals to NYCPS for screening/diagnosis when needed Communicate with DYCD regarding needs for specialized supports beyond program capacity (e.g., paraprofessionals, nurses, transportation) Ensure compliance with all DYCD requirements related to serving students with disabilities and providing reasonable accommodations Qualifications Demonstrated expertise in instructional practice, academic support, or curriculum development. Strong understanding of student learning, assessment, and data‑informed instruction. Experience working successfully with K–12 students; after‑school or extended learning experience preferred. Ability to coach educators, support lesson planning, and observe instructional practice. Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and problem‑solving skills. Ability to collaborate effectively with school staff, families, and community partners. Passion for youth development and commitment to BPCS's mission. Creative, flexible, culturally responsive, and able to model professionalism. Bachelor's degree preferred; teaching credentials, certifications, or advanced training are a plus. Ability to teach or support instruction across multiple subject areas preferred. Availability to work afternoons and evenings (typically 3:00–6:30 PM, with most shifts between 4:00–6:00 PM). Ability to follow program schedules, instructional expectations, and accept supervision. Must successfully complete a pre‑employment background investigation, including employment and criminal history. Compensation The Education Specialist will receive a stipend based on a $30 per hour rate, paid in two equal installments on 12/31 and 6/30, in accordance with BPCS payroll practices. All payments are subject to required federal, state, and local withholdings.
