Mechanical Engineer, Optical & Space Lasers Manufacturing (Starlink)
SpaceX
SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.MECHANICAL ENGINEER, OPTICAL & SPACE LASERS MANUFACTURING (STARLINK)Engineers on this team must have a working knowledge of design, manufacturing, testing, and flight. A successful mechanical engineer demonstrates engineering intuition, critical thinking, and is comfortable working under ambiguous requirements with minimal oversight. Combining these skills, engineers will face challenges across a wide variety of products and subassemblies. This team is frequently asked to tackle new, inter-departmental development projects and the ultimate goal is to deliver the optical assemblies required for our satellites to achieve their mission.RESPONSIBILITIES:Manage integration build flow and test operationsEvaluate proposed designs for manufacturability and integrationTranslate design requirements into test proceduresDesign fixtures, mechanisms, fluid systems and other types of hardware to support safe, efficient, and reliable testing of satellite systemsCreate detailed documentation for test systems including engineering drawings and schematicsUtilize hand calculations and tools such as FEA to inform and validate design decisionsInterface with both engineers and technicians to optimize manufacturing, testing, and automationDevelop and refine testing and manufacturing assembly procedures based on lessons learnedEnable day-to-day execution of product integration and test flowEvaluate non-conformances to determine root cause and create actionable items and system improvementsWork with upstream and downstream partner teams to drive improvements at the system levelReview data to understand and validate performance of manufacturing and test systemsBalance multiple high-priority projects through effective time management and communicationDemonstrate extreme ownership of all project phases from initial concept to final commissioning and operationBASIC QUALIFICATIONS:Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or other engineering discipline1+ years of professional mechanical design or hands-on manufacturing experience (internships/co-ops and club projects can apply)PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:Master's degree in mechanical engineering or other engineering disciplineExperience with integration and testing of optical, mechanical, propulsion, thermal, electrical, and/or structural systemsExperience working in a laboratory or industrial setting requiring hands-on work, attention to detail, and high regard for safetyKnowledge of common manufacturing processes and hands-on experience machining parts using standard equipment such as mills, lathes, CNC machinesExperience with optical and opto-mechanical hardware and systemsBasic understanding of industrial electrical, control, and instrumentation systemsBasic proficiency with Python or other programming languageDocumentation and configuration management experienceExperience writing test plans and procedures and providing go/no-go judgment and rationaleExperience with Siemens NX and Teamcenter CAD/PDM systemsExperience applying GD&TDemonstrated engineering intuition, critical thinking, and comfort with ambiguityExperience working effectively across multi-disciplinary teamsDesire to work in a fast-paced environmentADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:Some travel to our launch sites may be required as needed, up to 10%Ability to pass Air Force background checks for Cape Canaveral and VandenbergMust be willing to work extended hours and/or weekends as neededCOMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: Pay Range: Level 1: $100,000.00 - $117,500.00Level 2: $115,000.00 - $140,000.00Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on the following considerations: job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience.Base salary is just one part of your total rewards package at SpaceX. You may also be eligible for long-term incentives, in the form of company stock or long-term cash awards, as well as potential discretionary bonuses and the ability to purchase additional stock at a discount through an Employee Stock Purchase Plan. You will also receive access to comprehensive medical, vision, and dental coverage, access to a 401(k) retirement plan, short and long-term disability insurance, life insurance, paid parental leave, and various other discounts and perks. You may also accrue 3 weeks of paid vacation and will be eligible for 10 or more paid holidays per year. Employees in Washington State accrue paid sick time in compliance with state and federal law.
