Facilities & Maintenance TechnicianUrban Adamah is an educational farm and community center in Berkeley, California that integrates the practices of Jewish tradition, mindfulness, sustainable agriculture, and social action to build loving, just, and sustainable communities. We provide training programs, educational workshops, and community celebrations for more than 10,000 visitors annually.About The RoleThe Facilities & Maintenance Technician works under the supervision of the Farm and Facilities Director and takes day-to-day direction from the Senior Facilities Associate. This role supports the full-time facilities team in keeping Urban Adamah's buildings, grounds, and systems clean, safe, and in good working order. The ideal candidate is eager to grow their maintenance skills, enjoys hands-on physical work, and thrives in a collaborative team environment. They are reliable and able to work independently once tasks are assigned, while remaining flexible and comfortable shifting between indoor repairs, outdoor grounds work, and program support throughout the week.General Maintenance & RepairsAssist the facilities team with a variety of carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and drywall projectsTypes of projects may include:Drywall patching, painting, and touch-upsBench refinishing and repair of site furnitureFence and gate repairHardscaping repairs and improvementsReplacing batteries in devices site-wide (locks, thermostats, sensors, etc.)Systems & EquipmentRoutine cleaning and preventative maintenance of HVAC and refrigeration systems (filter changes, coil cleaning, visual inspections)Basic irrigation system support and repairs in coordination with the Farm teamReporting equipment issues that require outside vendors or specialized repairHelping maintain tools, carts, and small equipment in good working conditionSupporting routine maintenance of commercial kitchen equipment (dishwasher, refrigeration, etc.)Restocking consumables such as soaps, cleaning supplies, and paper productsOrganizing, cleaning, and labeling storage areas, tool rooms, and supply closetsCommunication & DocumentationUsing a task management app to review assignments and document completed work, including notes, photos, and follow-up needsCommunicating clearly with the Senior Facilities Associate and Farm and Facilities Director about progress, blockers, and supplies neededFlagging safety concerns, emerging maintenance issues, and repair needs promptlyGrounds & Site UpkeepClearing cob webs and washing windowsSweeping and maintaining pathwaysPower washing patios, walkways, and other surfaces throughout the siteWeeding, mowing, and light landscaping supportMaintaining the pond, including checking pump and water levels.Drainage maintenance and seasonal cleanup (gutters, drains, storm prep)Bringing trash and recycling to and from the curbMaking dump runs and hauling debris as neededOccasional cleaning of assigned areas using mops, dust mops, and standard cleaning suppliesAbout YouYou enjoy hands-on work and take pride in keeping a space well-maintained, organized, and safe. We are open to applicants with varying levels and types of experience, provided that the applicant displays the skills required to successfully execute the job described above.QualificationsRequired:2 to 3 years of experience in maintenance, a building trade, or handyman work (some non-professional experience is okay)Must pass a background checkComfortable using hand and power tools safely and effectivelyComfortable using a smartphone or tablet for task management and documentationValid driver's license and clear driving record (for dump runs and supply pickups)Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across a multi-team organizationReliable, punctual, and able to manage time well between assigned tasksPreferred:Familiarity with basic HVAC, refrigeration, or commercial kitchen equipmentExperience with irrigation systems, small engine repair, or weldingInterest in Urban Adamah's mission and in working on a Jewish educational farmUse outdoor power tools such as blowers, mowers, and weedeaters.Physical RequirementsStanding, walking, bending, kneeling, and crouching for extended periodsLifting and carrying up to 50 lbsComfortable on working safety on laddersWorking outdoors in varying weather conditions (rain, heat, cold, etc.)Performing repetitive tasks, including planting, weeding, and harvestingOperating hand tools, wheelbarrows, and small farm equipmentCompetenciesHands-On Work Ethic: You enjoy physical, outdoor work in all weather conditions and are comfortable with repetitive tasks.Attention to Detail: You follow instructions carefully and complete tasks thoroughly and efficiently.Team Player: You collaborate well with others, communicate clearly, and bring a positive attitude to the work environment.
