Position Description

CEI is looking for an experienced Carpenter that will be responsible for constructing, installing, maintaining, and removing concrete formwork and other temporary structures used in heavy civil construction projects. This position works closely with field crews to ensure work is completed safely, accurately, and according to project plans and specifications while supporting overall jobsite productivity and quality.

Position Requirements

Essential Duties / Responsibilities

Concrete Formwork and Carpentry

• Build, install, modify, and remove concrete formwork for foundations, walls, columns, bridge components, and other heavy civil structures.
• Construct and strip both custom and manufactured forming systems.
• Build temporary access structures including ladders, handrails, scaffolding, and fall protection systems as required.
• Read and interpret blueprints, plans, specifications, grade stakes, and layout information.
• Set forms to proper line and grade using builder's levels, auto levels, lasers, and other surveying equipment.
• Measure, cut, and assemble lumber, plywood, and other construction materials.
• Install, tie, and secure reinforcing steel as required.
• Brace and anchor forms to maintain proper alignment during concrete placement.
• Order concrete and assist with concrete placement activities.
• Perform form adjustments before, during, and after concrete pours.

Job Site Support

• Haul, stage, and organize materials, tools, and equipment.
• Maintain assigned hand tools and equipment in safe working condition.
• Assist with pipe installation, bedding, and other general construction activities as needed.
• Strip forms and clean concrete surfaces following placement.
• Shovel, rake, mix cement, and perform general labor duties.
• Keep work areas clean, organized, and free of hazards.
• Assist other crews as project needs require.

Safety Responsibilities

• Follow all CEI safety policies, procedures, and OSHA regulations.
• Participate in Pre-Task Planning, Stretch and Bend, Toolbox Talks, and other required safety meetings.
• Inspect work areas, tools, and equipment for hazards before beginning work.
• Properly use PPE and fall protection equipment.
• Report unsafe conditions, incidents, and near misses immediately.
• Stop work when unsafe conditions exist and communicate concerns to supervision.

All other duties as assigned

Education and Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Must have a valid driver license and clean MVR to operate a company vehicle.
• Minimum of 2 years of building and stripping concrete forms experience.
• Experience in commercial or heavy civil construction is preferred.

Required Skills and Abilities

• Working knowledge of concrete forming systems, carpentry techniques, and construction practices.
• Ability to safely operate hand and power tools commonly used in construction.
• Ability to read construction drawings, specifications, and grade information.
• Knowledge of layout procedures using batter boards, string lines, lasers, and builder's levels.
• Basic understanding of reinforcing steel placement and concrete construction.
• Ability to safely lift, carry, and handle construction materials.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing quality work.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a construction crew.
• Knowledge of trench safety, fall protection, confined space, rigging, and crane signaling is preferred.

• Continuously stand and walk on uneven terrain.
• Continuously use hands and wrists to operate hand and power tools.
• Frequently bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb.
• Frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
• Occasionally lift and carry more than 50 pounds with assistance.
• Frequently push, pull, and move construction materials and formwork.
• Frequently climb ladders, scaffolding, and temporary structures.
• Occasionally work at heights while using appropriate fall protection.
• Frequently perform repetitive motions involving the hands, arms, and shoulders.
• Frequently use visual acuity to read plans, measurements, grades, and layout information.
• Continuously maintain balance and coordination while working on active construction sites.

Work Environment

Work is performed primarily outdoors on active heavy civil construction projects with frequent exposure to changing weather conditions, dust, mud, concrete, noise, vibration, and moving equipment. Employees regularly work around excavation activities, reinforcing steel, concrete placement operations, and heavy machinery. Overtime, weekends, travel between project sites, and occasional overnight travel may be required based on project demands.
