Associate Athletics Director for Sports Medicine

Athletics and Physical Education offers a diverse program of physical and outdoor education, recreational services, intramural sports and intercollegiate athletics competition, plus Wellness programs for faculty and staff and fitness centers for the entire Cornell community.The Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine serves as a leader in the Cornell Athletics sports medicine department, providing oversight, clinical expertise, and operational direction while also serving as the primary athletic trainer for assigned high-impact sports programs. Through supervision of athletic training staff, this position will provide critical decision making regarding the prevention, assessment, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.Working collaboratively with athletics health and performance staff, team physicians, healthcare providers and coaches, this role helps to optimize student-athlete health, safety and performance. Through a unique blend of clinical expertise, leadership, mentorship, communication and performance integration that is critical to the success of Cornell Athletics, the Associate AD for Sports Medicine plays a central role in ensuring that student-athletes are healthy, prepared, and able to perform at their highest level while prioritizing their long-term well-being and overall development.This role operates within a high-performance, interdisciplinary model and requires a proactive, collaborative approach to integrated athlete care, blending clinical expertise with applied sport science principles.This is a 12-month, full-time position requiring extensive hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays and travel.Success Factors Demonstrated ability to lead and perform in a fast-paced, high-pressure Division I athletic environment, effectively managing multiple priorities, complex medical situations and emergency responses while maintaining sound judgement, composure and professionalism.Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and relationship building skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across a multidisciplinary team of student-athletes, coaches, physicians, and health and performance staff.Strong leadership and organizational presence including the ability to mentor and positively influence staff and student-athletes, maintain comprehensive medical documentation, working both independently and collaboratively to effectively manage competing operational responsibilities. Required QualificationsMaster’s degree in Athletic Training and at least 3 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.Certified Athletic Trainer and in good standing with the Board of Certification.CPR and AED certification for the professional rescuer and emergency first aid.Eligible for New York State Licensure.Advanced clinical knowledge of sports medicine and high-impact-sport related injury management, including the prevention, assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and return-to-play decision-making for orthopedic, spine, concussion and other sport-specific conditionsFamiliarity with electronic medical record systems and athlete management systems.Must be familiar with NCAA rules and regulations.Demonstrated skill in understanding cultural differences. Proven experience connecting inclusion, belonging and wellbeing practices to business goals.
