Job Title: Emergency Room Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Emergency Room Nurse Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Nights Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum 1 year License: Current, valid, full, and unrestricted RN license in the State of Alaska Certifications: BLS, PALS upon hire; ACLS must be obtained within 6 months of hire Must-Have: Current Alaska license Description: The clinical nurse coordinates and performs a variety of nursing care procedures for patients of all ages. Professional knowledge and consideration of specific patient conditions and treatments are required. The ability to work independently in completing assignments is essential. Guidelines include provider's orders, standards of care, nursing policies and procedures, and hospital policies. Nursing duties include support to individuals of all ages and their families. Clinical decisions are made independently during the scheduled shift. Maintaining complete accountability for all actions taken is necessary. The nurse will consult with the appropriate manager or supervisor in situations requiring additional input or resources. The ability to react calmly and make sound nursing judgments in emergency situations is required. Accountability for proper delegation and supervision of support staff is essential. The nurse promotes the standards of excellence and implements safe, therapeutic, and efficient care for patients with multisystem disease and/or complications of treatment. Prioritizing patient care based on acuity or patient preference is crucial. The nurse anticipates potential problems and adapts to changes in the area by setting priorities for emergencies. Initiating, managing, and documenting nursing procedures consistent with scientific principles and departmental policy is expected. Knowledge of equipment use and accurately administering age-specific medications and therapeutics are required skills. The nurse is responsible for carrying out the medical and nursing care plan and coordinating patient care activities with physicians and other healthcare team members. Initiating action to reduce, correct, or prevent risks to the patient is important. Facilitating healing through individualized, goal-oriented nursing care based on scientific principles and the nursing process is essential. The nurse explains tests, procedures, and disease processes to patients and significant others. Following through on nursing care plans involves teaching and demonstrating skills for understanding and coping with illness. The nurse communicates positively and supportively with patients and significant others. Counseling with emotional, intellectual, and psychological supports may be necessary. Evaluating patient progress towards goals and redirecting care plans based on reassessment is part of the role. Documenting the patient's response to care and assuring confidentiality of patient information is critical. The nurse conducts thorough assessments through interviewing, observation, and nursing processes. Identifying nursing diagnoses and problems by recognizing the impact of health issues on patients and families is expected. The ability to distinguish between normal and abnormal assessments to identify patient capabilities and limitations is required. Developing and contributing to a plan of nursing action based on patient problems and responses is part of the role. Transcribing and noting physician orders accurately is necessary. The nurse documents reassessments that include laboratory results and interdisciplinary notes. Participating in patient care conferences as applicable and developing educational programs and learning aids in the department is expected. Providing discharge patient information and participating in educational programs is part of the role. The nurse communicates with staff, patients, significant others, and other healthcare team members supportively and positively. Assisting in the orientation of new staff and guiding others in nursing interventions is important. The nurse follows and directs others to adhere to policies and patient care standards. Participating in departmental staff meetings and applying information from those meetings is required. Completing annual competencies, evaluations, and maintaining licenses and certifications is essential. Addressing unresolved problems with patients or coworkers through appropriate channels is expected. The nurse is responsible for ensuring quality patient care regardless of the situation encountered, whether routine or emergent. Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.
