Orthopedic Technician

Responsibilities Receives orders, verifies with the nurse, and acts before applying, adjusting or removing casts, braces, tractions, splints or other orthotic devices within the timeframe of the procedure. Demonstrates knowledge of equipment and supplies required to perform orthotic services (e.g., for traction application). Maintains Cast Cart, re‑orders and changes supplies utilized during the service. Assembles and discontinues traction(s) and/or trapeze as ordered by physician in a safe manner within the requested timeframe. Makes daily rounds on patients utilizing orthopedic equipment throughout the hospital to ensure proper adjustment. Provides coverage and assists physician (as appropriate) for orthopedic/rehabilitation inpatients; assists when necessary with procedures, casts and makes rounds with orthopedic physicians as requested. Assists physician in cast application and removal as requested. Documents orthotic tech services daily in the computer as per Policy and Procedures, reviewed by supervisor or during chart review, to maintain accurate records for dispensing and charging equipment and services. Cleans equipment with approved disinfectant and stores it appropriately when not in use. Maintains updated inventory of orthotic equipment and submits purchase orders for needed supplies. Inspects equipment to be used for patient services and reports maintenance or sanitary problems to supervisor. Attends and participates in in‑service training, orientation, and educational programs. Transfers and/or assists therapist in transferring patients using appropriate body mechanics. Prepares the treatment area before patient treatment as directed by therapist. Assists therapists in obtaining and delivering appropriate assistive devices, supplies, or other items necessary for patient treatment. Qualifications Ortho Tech Certificate required. High school diploma or equivalent. Equivalent orthopedic technology military training or comparable work experience required.
