The SPCA of Polk County is the oldest nonprofit no kill animal welfare organization in Polk County. We have served the community for over 45 years through pet adoptions, rehabilitation, transport, and community programs and low cost spay, neuter and wellness services. The clinic provides the community with affordable care for pets.
JOB DESCRIPTION
A clinic assistant is an important part of the success of our society by providing the highest level of service and care to all animals that we encounter. With attention to detail and strong organizational and communicative skills, a clinic assistant supports Veterinarians and Veterinary Technicians with surgical and wellness services, including but not limited to, careful and calm handling of all animals while following proper fear-free restrain measures, sedation, prepping and maintaining equipment, and managing and maintaining the work environment to ensure presentation and hygiene is of the highest standard.
HOURS
- Up to 40 hours per week (Full Time)
- May include Saturdays, as needed
DUTIES
- Assist Veterinarian and Veterinary Technicians to always ensure the highest level and quality of care.
- Communicate in an effective and professional manner with the public and all staff members.
- Represent the clinic in a professional and courteous manner at all times.
- Weighing animals and getting them housed in appropriate locations to assist with the check-in process.
- Handle and move animals following fear-free measures.
- Administering sedation medications to animals in a supervised and controlled environment.
- Monitoring animals that are in recovery and still under anesthesia.
- Sanitize instruments, prepare surgery packs, resupply medical supplies, and maintain equipment.
- General hygiene care standards, including disinfection of all areas to meet required standards.
- Close down of area, including deep cleaning and prep for the following day.
QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE
- Follow all written and verbally communicated departmental standard operating procedures.
- Excellent communication skills and an ability to multitask.
- Ability to rapidly and accurately process information.
- Experience in a veterinary setting preferred.
- Attention to detail.
- Knowledge of basic animal behavior and proper methods of animal restraint.
- Must be able to use appropriate safety equipment for fractious or feral animals (will train)-the use of safety equipment is mandatory.
- Should be able to identify own limitations and be willing to ask for help.
- Able to understand and carry out oral and written directions.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work is performed in an animal shelter. Potential for exposure to high noise levels, zoonotic diseases, animal waste, hazardous chemicals, sharp objects, and potential aggressive animals.
- Must be able to carry and lift animals that may weigh up to 115 lbs.
- Must be able to walk and stand for long periods of time.
- Must have the ability to lift, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, push, and other strenuous activities.
