Supervisor - MRI

Reporting to the Director Radiology, manages daily operations of the Radiology MRI Department to include the technical and the physical plant in both of these areas. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission and values.

Supervises technical services of MRI departments
Schedules area assignments of personnel
Coordinates activities and services of the departments
Schedules maintenance of the equipment
Responsible fo the quality control of technical standards
Schedules patient flow consistent with staffing and room availability
Coordinates exams with appropriate areas in the Radiology Department
Reports problems relating to staffing, morale, work methods, procedures, transfers, and recommends action in all personnel matters for those personnel assigned to him/her
Responsible for all safety regulations in assigned areas of supervision
Participates in formal teaching programs and in-service educational classes as required
Responsible for procurement of supplies for the department
Assists with development, review/revision of policies and procedures
Assists with intervewing and coaching members of the MRI team
Assists Director of Radiology with budget process
Performs MRI procedures
Prepares exam room and equipment to conduct MRI examinations in accordance with infectious disease, sterilization, and patient safety protocols, policies, and procedures
Assumes responsibility for the safety of the patient during the MRI examination
Reviews patient medical history, previous imaging, and supporting clinical information
Ensures that the MRI examination order is complete, contains relevant information, and meets the standard of medical necessity
Evaluates any contraindications, insufficient patient preparation, and the patients inability or unwillingness to tolerate the examination and associated procedures
Communicates with the patient in a manner appropriate to the patients ability to understand
Use proper patient positions tools, devices, and equipment adjustment to ensure patient comfort and safety, and to prevent compromised data acquisition
Conduct patient clinical assessment and performs the MRI examination ordered by the physician in accordance with professional and facility scanning guidelines and protocols
Apply independent, professional, ethical judgment, and critical thinking to safely perform MRI procedures
Apply independent judgment during the MRI examination to ensure that appropriate anatomical, pathological, and clinical conditions are accurately captured in the examination images
Except as authorized by written facility policies and procedures, refer specific diagnostic, treatment or prognosis question to the appropriate physician or healthcare professional
Identify and document any limitations to the MRI examination
Review examination images and submit to PACS for the interpreting physician
Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with privacy laws (i.e. HIPAA) and facility policies and procedures
Adhere to accepted professional and ethical standards
Provide patient services consistent with the Scope of Practice and Clinical Standards for the Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologist
Maintains appropriate supply par levels in MRI examination rooms
Maintain cleanliness of the equipment and room
MR Safety Officer (MRSO)
Develops, documents, and introduces, in conjunction with and under the authority of the MR supervising radiologist, safe working procedures for the MRI environment
Readily accessible and available to the MRI technologists
Ensures proper policies and procedures for day-to-day MRI safety are enforced
Ensures that appropriate measures for minimizing risks to health that arise from the use of or exposure to the MRI equipment, as per the direction of the MRI supervising radiologist, are implemented and monitored
Manges hazards posed by the MRI equipment, and monitors the measures taken to protect against such hazards
Ensures that medical, technical, nursing, and all other relevant staff groups who may be exposed to the MRI environment are educated appropriately on a regular basis as to the safety requirements and updated as necessary
Maintains records of the personnel who have been educated appropriately as to the safety requirements
Consults the supervising MRI radiologist when further advice is required regarding MRI safety
Reports to the supervising MRI radiologist in a timely fashion any and all MRI safety-related issues
Ensures that there is a clear policy for the purchasing, testing, and marking of all equipment that will be taken into the MRI environment
Provides or ensures the provision of MRI safety education and training
Equipment Use and Maintenance
Performs quality control procedures to ensure that the MRI equipment operates at optimal levels
Contacts BioMedical Engineering immediately upon finding the MRI equipment is not operating at optimal levels
Documentation and Reporting
Documents any incidental findings that may impact patient safety or patient care and provide that information to the interpreting physician
Operates the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS)
Exercise responsibility for the maintenance and accuracy of facility database records and logs
Documents quality assurance and quality control results appropriately
Quality Assessment / Quality Improvement
Works with the appropriate staff to ensure quality patient care
Carries out Quality Assurance protocols and Quality Improvement measures within the facility
Participates in departmental Process Improvement projects and staff meetings
Demonstrates commitment to professional growth and competence

Projects positive image of self and hospital when dealing with physicians, other departments, patients, families and visitors

Must be a graduate of an AMA approved school of Radiological Technology with certification in Radiography with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)
