Job Summary
Are you an experienced healthcare professional ready to share your clinical expertise with the next generation of patient care and medical assisting professionals? The Tennessee College of Applied Technology Knoxville is seeking a part-time Adjunct Instructor of Patient Care Technology/Medical Assisting at our Union County campus evening program.
In this role, you will deliver high-quality instruction in classroom, laboratory, and clinical settings — including nursing assisting, phlebotomy, electrocardiography (EKG), anatomy and physiology, and medical terminology — helping students earn the credentials that launch their careers in hospitals, long-term care facilities, physicians’ offices, and clinics throughout East Tennessee. You will join a supportive faculty team and have the opportunity to combine your passion for healthcare with the rewarding work of teaching and mentoring. This is a part-time adjunct position working fewer than 30 hours per week. Days, hours, and instructional assignments are scheduled by the Director of Practical Nursing and Allied Health based on program and student needs and may vary by term. Travel to clinical sites and other TCAT Knoxville campuses may be required. Job Duties
Instruction & Student Learning
- Teach assigned portions of the Patient Care Technology/Medical Assisting curriculum in classroom, laboratory, and clinical settings.
- Assist with the supervision of students’ clinical rotations.
- Select and apply the instructional methods best suited to students’ needs, interests, and abilities.
- Monitor, evaluate, and grade student progress, and provide academic support.
- Maintain a safe, organized, and professional laboratory and classroom learning environment.
- Maintain confidential, accurate, and complete student records, both on paper and electronically. - (Essential)
Program & Clinical Support
- Follow current, approved course syllabi and deliver instruction aligned with program competencies.
- Support positive, professional relationships with assigned clinical sites and meet their requirements for student supervision.
- Assist with student recruitment and promotion of the program within the community as requested. - (Essential)
Compliance & Professional Development
- Communicate professionally, tactfully, and courteously with students, colleagues, clinical partners, and the general public.
- Conduct all activities in accordance with FERPA, applicable laws, TBR policies, and COE accreditation standards.
- Remain current in the healthcare field and in instructional methods, and attend required in-service and professional development activities.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor and/or administration. - (Essential)
Minimum Qualifications
• Current, active licensure in the State of Tennessee as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).
• A minimum of three (3) years of clinical experience as an RN or LPN within the past five (5) years.
• The knowledge, experience, and certifications necessary to teach in areas such as nursing assisting (CNA), phlebotomy, electrocardiography (EKG), BLS and first aid, anatomy and physiology, and medical terminology.
• Ability to meet all requirements established by clinical sites in order to supervise students (site requirements are subject to change at the discretion of each site).
• Computer proficiency and the ability to adapt quickly to new technology.
Preferred Qualifications
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
• A minimum of two (2) years of long-term care experience
• Prior teaching experience, or demonstrated evidence of the ability to teach
• Current BLS and first aid instructor certification
• Knowledge of Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) policies and procedures
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills necessary to be an effective instructor of adult learners.
• Strong organizational and planning skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and clinical partners.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Microsoft Teams, and the ability to learn Ellucian Banner and the College’s learning management system (LMS).
• Ability to maintain confidential, accurate, and complete student records in accordance with FERPA and to complete required reports in a timely manner.
• Ability to meet and maintain the health, screening, and certification requirements of assigned clinical sites, and to travel to clinical sites and other TCAT Knoxville campuses as needed.

- Environment: Work is performed in classroom, laboratory, and clinical settings at the TCAT Knoxville – Union County campus, and may include off-site clinical locations and travel to other TCAT Knoxville campuses. This position works fewer than 30 hours per week.
- Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in classroom, laboratory, and clinical healthcare settings; to stand or sit for prolonged periods; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull up to 30 lbs.; to move about in order to demonstrate procedures and assist students; and to effectively communicate to exchange information.
SALARY:
$30.00 per hour, in accordance with Tennessee Board of Regents guidelines. This is a part-time position working fewer than 30 hours per week.
