Senior Cloud Engineer - AWS

Sr Cloud Engineer - IE07NE The Hartford’s Reliability Engineering Squad is improving how we architect and implement applications on Amazon Web Services (AWS) using Infrastructure as Code (IaC). We are looking for a Senior Cloud Engineer to play a key role in supporting this effort for application migrations, new application development, and the design of new architecture patterns. Responsibilities Lead projects in AWS and GCP and break down work for engineers. Identify, drive, and lead the implementation of products and reference implementations to standardize deployment of applications in AWS and GCP. Design reusable architectures and services that can be leveraged by agile teams to improve development velocity. Engineer applications following fault‑tolerant best practices, with proper data replication and multi‑region support. Develop applications in Python to automate manual processes and repeatable decision making. Develop Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform, CloudFormation templates, YAML files, build specifications, and Python Lambda functions to automate the build and release process for all AWS resource infrastructure and code artifacts. Maintain deep knowledge of AWS services including ECS, RDS Aurora Postgres, Lambda, CloudWatch, EKS, S3, IAM, SNS, SQS, and EventBridge. Design systems and implement new software architecture patterns. Mentor Cloud Engineers and Software Engineers. Troubleshoot problems with software and infrastructure. Automate disaster recovery, high availability, and fault tolerance. Present new ideas to leadership and lead on topics to improve team learning. Communicate clearly and professionally in speech and writing. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related Engineering field. 2+ years of Python experience. 1+ year of Infrastructure as Code experience (Terraform, CloudFormation, CDK). 4+ years of software development experience. Strong oral and written communication skills. Preferred Qualifications 2+ years of software architecture and systems design experience. Strong software development knowledge. Technical knowledge of AWS or GCP related to application development. Experience writing code to automate manual processes. Excellent communication across all organizational levels and ability to influence leadership. Proven ability to work with cross‑functional teams and translate requirements between business, project management, and technical stakeholders. Work Location & Schedule Hybrid work schedule: 3 days a week in the office (Tuesday through Thursday) in one of the following locations – Columbus, OH; Chicago, IL; Hartford, CT; or Charlotte, NC. Compensation The annualized base pay range for this role is $137,200 – $205,800. Actual base pay may vary based on performance, proficiency, and demonstrated competencies. Other rewards may include short‑term or annual bonuses, long‑term incentives, and on‑the‑spot recognition. Eligibility Candidate must be authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship. This position does not support STEM OPT I‑983 Training Plan endorsement.
