We create hope, justice, and empowerment with farmworking and rural families in New York by building community and developing leaders through advocacy, education and the arts. RMM’s Vision Statement: We envision a New York State where farmworking and rural families are empowered, are treated with dignity and respect, and have the opportunities and resources they need to thrive. Our goals for Western New York include the following: Creating a Center that is a hub of energy/activity in the region for farmworkers, rural workers, and youth that focuses on farmworker justice, welcomes people from across NYS, and supports union organizing. Developing a strong Rural Academy of the People (RAP). Developing a solid rural Youth Empowerment Program (YEP). Developing a strong Rural Women’s Empowerment Program. Building a strong ally and donor base. Working hand-in-hand with the YEP team, which includes helping to develop and implement semi-annual statewide YEP retreats/institutes and Overnight Camp. Working in partnership with RMM staff, the Western New York Associate Coordinator will be responsible for the following: Working with the WNY Regional Coordinator to develop Liturgia as a Center for farmworkers, rural workers, and ally leadership by nurturing relationships with partners, including Grace!, Hobart William and Smith Colleges, and others. Working with the WNY Regional Coordinator to develop new programming and activities. Reaching out to farmworking and rural worker communities throughout the region in their homes, camps, by phone, etc. Run and coordinate the Justice Organization of Youth (JOY) program, including: Designing a yearlong curriculum that includes goals and activities. Coordinating and supervising regular weekly meetings and sub-meetings of JOY, ensuring participation, leadership development, and safety. Developing and maintaining a strong relationship with school districts in Wayne, Ontario, Seneca, and Yates counties. Arranging transportation for JOY meetings, Summer Day Program, and other events in WNY. Assisting youth in identifying issues that matter to them and exploring collective action. Run and coordinate our new youth program, Youth Lens of Justice (YLJ), in Albion, including: Coordinating and supervising regular weekly meetings and sub-meetings of YLJ, ensuring participation, leadership development, and safety. Assisting in implementation of a youth empowerment curriculum focused on social justice and community engagement. Conducting outreach to youth and families within farmworker and rural worker communities such as Albion, Brockport, and other nearby school districts. Building and maintaining relationships with parents/guardians to support youth participation. Maintaining a relationship and collaboration with local schools, community partners, and organizations across the counties being served. Encouraging youth leadership by supporting youth-led activities, discussions, and projects. Assisting youth in identifying issues that matter to them and exploring collective action. Other Responsibilities: Recruiting and supervising interns, counselors, and volunteers. Directing the Summer Day Program (on-site presence), developing and implementing a transportation system (which may involve you driving as well). Developing the curriculum for the Summer Day Program (utilizing the organization-wide summer theme). Recruiting and participating at the Overnight Leadership Camp. Performing all other duties assigned by the WNY Regional Coordinator. Requirements of the Position Include: Experience working with youth, especially disenfranchised youth. Experience in working for systemic change. Committed to social and economic justice within disenfranchised communities. Bilingual in Spanish and English. Strong interest in working with community-based organizations, including faith and academic communities, who will become partners to the program. Creative and flexible — realizing this is more than a “9-to-5” job. Able to work evenings regularly and occasional weekends. A strategist with strong interpersonal, networking, and organizing skills. An independent worker and who is also committed to teamwork. Self-motivated with excellent speaking skills. Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office applications and Google Drive. A driver’s license and a willingness to drive many miles to connect with students and partners. A willingness to work with participants at home, school, and community. This is a full-time position with flexible hours and days, based out of our Center in Lyons, NY.
