Trainee Bus Driver

Bus Driver, Trainee Huntsville ISD

A Driver Trainee is responsible for participating in the Huntsville ISD training program to include MAP 21, skills performance, and observation to obtain the skills and techniques necessary to successfully pass the Texas Department of Public Safety skills tests required to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License with Passenger and School Bus endorsements.

The Driver Trainee position is subject to the following limitations:

• Trainee must complete training and be prepared for skills test within 45 days from the first training session.
• Skills testing will be conducted either by the Texas Department of Public Safety or by Huntsville ISD through the Texas Department of Public Safety Third Party Skills Testing program.

Special Knowledge/Skills:

• 18 Years of Age
• Acceptable driving record and criminal history
• Valid State of Texas Class C (or higher) driver license
• Pass a pre-employment Texas School Bus Driver physical exam and pre-employment drug test
• Must obtain school bus safety education certificate

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

1. Complete Texas CDL written exams to obtain Commercial Driver's License Permit

2. Pre-trip vehicle inspection to include under-hood, interior, and exterior inspections

3. Basic vehicle control maneuvers: backing, turning, parking

4. Specialized maneuvers: railroad crossings, student loading, roadside stops, freeway driving

5. Exhibit care and safety when performing all assigned and directed tasks

6. Attend all school bus driver training as required by trainer or supervisor

7. Ride on routes as assigned and observe techniques used by the bus driver for vehicle operation and control, student management, and emergency procedures

8. Assist the driver with student management and safety while observing routes.

9. Assist driver with loading and unloading students as necessary

10. Assist with the loading and unloading process of students on the loading dock

11. Assist driver with maintaining the cleanliness of bus interior

12. Administer basic first aid as trained when necessary

13. Be punctual

14. Communicate clearly with students, coworkers, and supervisors.

15. Perform all other duties as assigned

Student Management:

16. Instruct students on safe entering, exiting, and passenger rules and regulations. Supervise students while they board and leave the bus and cross the street.

17. Maintain discipline and use effective behavior management control over groups of students. Report student discipline problems to appropriate administrator and communicate with teachers and parents regarding student's behavior when warranted.

18. Perform emergency evacuation of students on bus when the situations warrants.

Safety:

19. Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.

20. Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crow bar, and reflector.

21. Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor. Report any hazardous conditions along scheduled route.

22. Maintain safety certification.

Other:

23. Operate and monitor two-way radio equipment to communicate with transportation office and other drivers.

24. Complete and maintain accurate, up-to-date, and timely records and reports including but not limited to those related to bus mileage, gas and oil consumption, and number of passengers transported.

25. Drive white fleet vehicle as needed.

Tools/Equipment Used: Operate school bus; two-way radio; safety equipment including but not limited to flares, reflective signs, and fire extinguisher

Posture: Prolonged sitting; frequent standing and twisting; occasional kneeling/squatting, bending, stooping, and pushing/pulling

Motion: Prolonged driving; moderate walking; frequent climbing stairs, grasping/squeezing, wrist and shoulder flexion/extension, and reaching

Lifting: Limited light lifting and carrying (under 15 pounds) on a daily basis

Environment: Frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, noise, and vehicle fumes; work around moving vehicles; regularly work irregular hours, and occasionally work prolonged hours

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress
